IRVING, Texas—Eight Lions—Peter Chromiak '06, Ted Gregory '74, Bob Hauschildt '12, Anders Hill '18, Zach Olinger '14, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Peter Pilling, Michael Quarshie '05 and Andy Shalbrack '10—will represent Columbia Football this week at the third annual National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame Campbell Trophy Summit, sponsored by Intuit Inc.
The event will take place August 14-17 at Stanford University and will provide a powerful opportunity for members of the Campbell Trophy community to interact and learn from many of the nation's top entrepreneurs and Silicon Valley CEOs about the lessons that have guided them to the highest levels of success. The event will also include a career expo with more than a dozen companies on-site recruiting the attendees. Organized as a tribute to the late William V. Campbell '62, the award's namesake, the event serves as a vehicle for the many leaders impacted by Campbell to pass on his insights for leadership and personal growth to the next generation.
Campbell, who played (1959-61) and coached at Columbia (1974-79) before a switch to the business world, became one of the most influential individuals in Silicon Valley as CEO and Chairman of Intuit and a board member of Apple and Google. He developed a unique reputation, earning the moniker as the "Coach of Silcon Valley" for using the lessons of the gridiron as he mentored Steve Jobs of Apple, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt of Google, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, Scott Cook and Brad Smith of Intuit, and countless others.
"It's a real honor to be here, and to pay tribute to the man that this trophy is named after," said Intuit Chairman and CEO Brad Smith in addressing the attendees at the 2018 event. "It's a great honor to speak to you because you have been recognized as someone who carries his name with distinction. That individual is Bill Campbell…. This is the must-attend event in Silicon Valley, and I can attest to that because I have had multiple people ask me how they can buy a ticket, but that is what makes this event so special you can't buy your way here. You have to earn your way here, and everyone in this room has done just that."
"Bill Campbell was an amazing individual who represented all that is good in the world," Columbia's Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Al Bagnoli said. "A tremendous friend, mentor, and colleague, Bill was a guy that inspired so many people, not just in football and athletics, but throughout the business world and entire Columbia University community. This event is a direct reflection of Bill and his values."
A four-day event, the 2019 Summit includes leadership workshops, a career expo, team building activities, a physical and mental competition dubbed the "Campbell Championship Series," a dinner cruise on San Francisco Bay and several other activities designed to build relationships. The panels will cover a wide range of topics designed to foster leadership, personal growth and the career development of the attendees. The sessions this year include a Hall of Fame panel with Ronnie Lott (USC) and 1983 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Steve Young (BYU); a workshop with Liz Wiseman, the author of The New York Times bestseller "Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter;" and sessions with Intuit CEO Brad Smith, SoFI CEO and former Army West Point linebacker Anthony Noto, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner and retired four-star General Stanley McChrystal.
Companies participating in the career expo include Altamont Capital, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Deloitte, Enjoy, EY, Google, Intuit, JMI Sports, McChrystal Group, SoFi, Sonim Technologies, WeDriveU and the XFL as well as professionals from the medical and real state fields and several entrepreneurs from a diverse range of emerging companies.
Hoping to expand the Summit's impact, organizers have established the "Campbell Trophy® Mentor Challenge," which will encourage attendees to continue Bill's legacy of mentoring by volunteering with a local community-based organization after returning to their local communities. Setting a modest goal of 50 attendees committing to 200 hours of community service, organizers hope to achieve an impact of 10,000 hours during the next year.
A total of 214 previous nominees for the Campbell Trophy have accepted invitations to attend the summit. This year's attendees will travel from Finland, Japan, Tanzania, England, Canada, 44 states, and the District of Columbia, representing 136 colleges and universities from all divisions, and their current careers range from doctors, engineers, lawyers, physicists and business and civic leaders. All accommodations and meals are provided at no charge for the attendees, and first-time attendees who need assistance receive a $400 travel stipend.
