Second-Half Goal Pushes Hofstra Past Columbia, 1-0

The Lions fell 1-0 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — A second-half goal from Hofstra propelled the Pride past the Columbia women's soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Lions fall to 3-2-1 on the season, while Hofstra rises to 5-3 overall.

Following a scoreless first half, Hofstra's Lucy Shepherd found a pass from Lucy Porter to score the lone goal of the match in the 74th minute. Using her right foot, Shepherd hammered a first-touch goal into the middle of the net from 12 yards out.

With the clock winding down, the Lions had their best opportunity in the 87th minute after earning a corner kick. Senior midfielder Maddie Temares curled the shot past the goal line and Columbia began to celebrate the equalizer, but the goal was waved off as the Lions were called for goalkeeper interference.

Possession time was nearly equal in the contest as the Lions controlled the ball for 48 percent of the match, but the Pride outshot Columbia 12-4 overall. The Lions also had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Columbia's first-year goalkeeper Liz Matei once again played all 90 minutes in net, making four stops for the Lions.

Returning home for a pair of games in the coming week, Columbia will take on NJIT on Friday at 6 p.m. ET before playing host to Drexel on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Both matches can be seen live on ESPN+.
