Columbia Volleyball senior Chichi Ikwuazom won her third straight Ivy League Player of the Week award, while first-year Kiara Robichaud took Rookie of the Week.
PRINCETON, N.J. – In what is quickly becoming a weekly tradition, Columbia Volleyball senior Chichi Ikwuazom was, for the third straight week, named the Ivy League Player of the Week, while for the first time this season, first-year Kiara Robichaud was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week in what was a clean sweep for the Lions in the weekly conference awards as announced today, Monday, Sept. 23, by the Ivy League.
It is the first time in program history that the Lions have had a student-athlete named Ivy League Player of the Week for three straight weeks, and with the addition of Robichaud's Rookie of the Week nomination the Lions have a clean sweep of the Ivy League weekly awards for the first time since then-senior Anja Malesevic and then-first-year Audrey Cheng swept the awards during the week of Oct. 30, 2017. Robichaud also becomes the first Lion to win Rookie of the Week since then-first-year Emily Teehan won back-to-back Rookie of the Week awards during the weeks of Oct. 1-8, 2018.
Ikwuazom continued her dominate start to the 2019 season with 81 kills over Columbia's three straight wins on three straight nights this past week. She tied her career-high with second 29 kill performance in a week against San Jose State in the Lions 3-2 win and hit .521 with 28 kills against LIU in Columba's five-set comeback win.
The weekend began with Ikwuazom ripping off 24 kills, while hitting .420 in Columbia's first win of the weekend, 3-1 over Fordham and she averaged 5.79 kills per set and 6.21 points per set over the three matches while hitting .470. Nationally, Ikwuazom is second in the country in kills per set (5.89), fourth in points per set (6.42), fifth in hitting percentage (.476), ninth in total points (231.0) and 11th total kills (212).
As for Robichaud, she was key in supporting the Lion offense over Columbia's three straight victories and she opened the weekend with 14 kills in Columbia's 3-1 win over Fordham. Robichaud then added eight kills to her weekend total against San Jose State in the Lions' 3-2 win and was a big and efficient factor in Columbia's comeback 3-2 win over LIU, recording 11 kills while hitting .360 in the match.
Against LIU, Robichaud recorded her first career double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs and over the weekend she had 33 total kills averaging 2.36 kills per set. Robichaud was also clutch on the serve, serving at a high percentage of .925 on 40 total attempts and her defense was solid as well, averaging 1.64 digs per set over the three matches.
