Lions Host Stony Brook In Final Non-Conference Match

Columbia Volleyball will play Stony Brook on Morningside, with the 7 p.m. serve scheduled for Monday, Sept. 30, in one final non-conference matchup.
NEW YORK – On Monday, Sept. 30, Columbia Volleyball (7-3, 0-1 IVY) will play host, at Levien Gym, to the Stony Brook Seawolves (4-11, 0-1 AEC) in one final non-conference matchup before Ivy League play, which began on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Cornell, really gets going, with first serve set for 7 p.m.

REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS WEEKEND: The Lions played the first Ivy League contest of the 2019 season with a visit to Cornell, on Saturday, Sept. 28, a match that the Big Red took in straight sets to snap the Lions' four match winning streak. Senior Chichi Ikwuazom did have another solid day for the Lions, collecting a match-high 15 kills on 27 total attacks, for a hitting percentage of .407.
As a squad, the Lions did collect seven blocks, to Cornell's four blocks, and junior Audrey Cheng did a consistent job of setting the offense, collecting 21 assists and adding six digs in the match.
NATIONAL CHICHI: Entering the match against Cornell, Ikwuazom was ranked as one of the best in the nation on the offensive side, as she was second in kills per set (5.89), third in points per set (6.42) fourth in hitting percentage (.476), ninth in total kills (212) and 14th in total points (231.0).
CHICHI ADDS TO THE CASE: Ikwuazom has been filling up her trophy case over the first month of the season and she was named the Ivy League Player of the Week over the first three weeks, giving her three straight weeks from Sept. 9-23 where Ikwuazom has held the title. Ikwuazom's performance also got national attention as well, with Ikwuazom being named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week, for the week of Sept. 23, following her three-match performance the weekend prior, where she racked up 81 total kills, averaged 5.79 kills per set and hit .470.
ROBICHAUD'S ROOKIE NOD: First-year Kiara Robichaud joined Ikwuazom on the Ivy League award list, with Robichaud being named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the week of Sept. 23. That nod gave her two accolades over the first month of her collegiate career with a visit to the Ivy League Honor Roll coming on the week before.
CHENG TRIPLES UP: In Columbia's home opener against Fordham, on Sept. 19, junior Audre Cheng had herself a night, recording 47 assists, 13 kills and 12 digs on her way to her first career double-double and the first by a Lion since Paula Lobeck recorded a triple-double on Sept. 17, 2002. Historically it was the ninth triple-double in program history and Cheng becomes the fourth Lion to ever record a triple-double. Nationally, Cheng is one of 21 student-athletes to have recorded at least one triple-double so far this season.
WHAT THE SEAWOLVES BRING: Monday's matchup will be the first between the two programs since 2015, when the Lions lost, 3-1, at Stony Brook, and this will be the first matchup on Morningside since 2014, a straight set win for Columbia. The Seawolves enter the match having lost three out of their last four matches, including the previous two matches, and they are 4-11, and 0-1 in the American East Conference, having dropped their conference opener at Hartford, 3-1, on Sept. 27.
All-time Stony Brook leads the series 4-2, and this will be the fourth matchup between the two at Levien in the series' history.
Offensively, the Seawolves have three attackers with at least 100 total kills, and Liz Pulver's 150 kills leads the way. Amiyah De'Long (115) and Kendra Harlow (114) round out Stony Brook's three student-athletes with at least 100 kills. At the net Harlow leads the way with 34.0 blocks and Kiani Kerstetter rounds the Seawolves out with a team-high 216 digs.
As a team, Stony Brook is hitting .188, while teams are striking at a rate of .276. The Seawolves do dig the ball well, averaging 13.4 digs per set, with a total of 723 digs which ranks them in the top three in the AEC.
