Lions men’s squad finishes an undefeated 5-0 on the day, while women post a 2-3 record.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—The Columbia fencing teams concluded competition at the Penn State Invitational as the Lions fenced against host Penn State, Duke, North Carolina, Temple, Haverford, and Ivy League foes Yale and Penn Sunday inside Penn State's White Building.
Columbia's men finished the day by defeating all five of its opponents. Their five wins came against Penn, Penn State, Duke, Haverford and North Carolina. Columbia's women won two duals while also dropping three. Their two wins came against Penn State and Duke, while they dropped closely-contested matches to Temple, North Carolina and Penn.
A variety of Columbia fencers did not compete on Sunday.
MEN'S DUALS
The Lions' men's squad swept all five of its dual match opponents. It defeated Penn State 15-12, using a 7-2 advantage in foil. Columbia defeated Duke 17-10 on account of an 8-1 foil advantage. The Lions used a 7-2 win in epee to defeat Penn 15-12. The Lions took advantage of an 8-1 foil advantage and 6-3 epee win to register an 18-9 victory over North Carolina. The Lions' largest margin of victory on the day came against Haverford, in a 24-3 victory.
WOMEN'S DUALS
Columbia's women defeated Penn State 15-12 on account of seven epee victories. The Lions captured six out of nine epee bouts and five out of four foil bouts to defeat Duke 14-13. Against Penn, the Quakers gained a 7-2 win in epee and 6-3 win in sabre to claim a 17-10 win over the Lions. North Carolina won all three weapons to register a 16-11 win over the Lions. Temple also claimed a 14-13 win over Columbia.
Columbia is back in action this weekend when it travels to Jamaica, N.Y. to compete in Saturday's highly competitive St. John's Super Cup and on Sunday at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia. In Saturday's event, the Lions will fence against Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Harvard and host St. John's. At Penn, the Lions will face St. John's, Wayne State, Temple, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Lafayette and Ohio State.
