Lions faced nation’s top programs Saturday in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. -- The Columbia Lions took on five schools that all rank inside the top five nationally Saturday at the St. John's Invitational. The Lion women put on a strong performance by going 4-1. The men battled hard but finished the meet 1-4.
"This tournament has been around for the past 25 years with the same people," head coach Michael Aufrichtig said. "It is one of the strongest competitions."
The six programs in attendance have combined to win 29 of 30 team NCAA Championships since to become a co-ed sport in 1990. Penn State has claimed 13 of those titles, while Columbia won its third national championship over the last five seasons this past year.
In 2019, all six of the schools participating in this week's invitational collectively placed in the top six spots at the NCAA Championships. Five of the six schools competing this weekend also garnered at least one individual national champion.
The women dominated in the competition scoring by winning four matches and defeating Notre Dame, St. John's, Penn State and Harvard. Top competitors in foil were Natalie Minarik and Rachel Zhang. In epee, Giana Vierheller finished 4-1.
The men's side was dominated by foil, leading with Sidharth Kumbla and Sam Moelis. The men went undefeated in foil in the fifth round against Notre Dame, finishing 9-0. In other rounds they came close to victory falling short by a few points.
The Lions now head to Philadelphia for the Philadelphia Invite, where they will face off against Notre Dame, Northwestern, Lafayette, Temple, St. John's, Wayne State and Ohio State on Sunday.
