Weekend events to expose defending national champion Lions to nation's top fencing teams.
QUEENS, N.Y./PHILADELPHIA—The defending national champion Columbia Fencing program is back in action this weekend as the men's and women's teams will compete at two highly competitive events including the Saturday's St. John's Invitational in Queens, N.Y. and Sunday's Penn Invitational in Philadelphia.
In Saturday's event at nearby St. John's, the Lions will fence against Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Harvard and host St. John's. Including Columbia, the six competing programs have combined to win 29 of the previous 30 team NCAA Championships since it became a co-ed sport in 1990. In 2019, all six of the schools participating in this week's invitational collectively placed in the top six spots at the NCAA Championships. Five of the six schools competing this weekend also garnered at least one individual national champion.
The one-day event will follow a dual match format and begins at 10 a.m. at Taffner Field House. Columbia's dual match schedule is as follows: versus St. John's at 10 a.m., Harvard at 11:15 a.m., Ohio State at 12:30 a.m., Penn State at 2:15 p.m. and then Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m.
On Sunday at Penn, the Lions will face St. John's, Wayne State, Temple, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Lafayette and Ohio State. On Sunday, the event begins at 9:45 a.m. at the Tse Center on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
