1/15/2020 11:50:00 AM | Men's Squash, Women's Squash
Lions take on No. 2/2 ranked Trinity on Thursday and No. 1/1 ranked Harvard on Sunday; Women also host Stanford on Sunday.
NEW YORK—The Columbia Men's and Women's Squash teams will host five important matches this weekend including head-to-head matchups against the nation's No. 2 and No. 1 ranked squash teams in Trinity and Harvard on Thursday and Sunday respectively at New York's SL Green StreetSquash (41 West 115th Street, between 5th and Lenox avenues).
Columbia enters the weekend with a No. 10 national men's ranking and a No. 8 national women's ranking by the College Squash Association. The men's team enters the weekend with a 5-3 record, while the women's squad is 7-1 and is currently riding a five-match win streak.
On Thursday, the Lions' men's and women's teams will take on Trinity (Conn.). First-serve is scheduled for noon ET. Trinity enters the matchup ranked No. 2 in both the men's and women's national squash team rankings. The Bantams' men's squad is a perfect 9-0 while the women's squad holds a 7-0 record.
Columbia's ties to Trinity are deep as Head Coach Jacques Swanepoel is a 2007 graduate of the Connecticut school. A former member of the South African National Squash Team, Swanepoel was a two-time All-American at Trinity, and helped lead the Bantams to four consecutive national championships. Swanepoel served as a captain at Trinity as a senior, and was named the team's Most Improved Player in back-to-back seasons (2005 and 2006). Prior to his time at Trinity, Swanepoel was the No. 2 ranked junior player in South Africa, and participated on the country's U-19 national team. Additionally, Associate Head Coach Joanne Schickerling served as an assistant coach at the Connecticut school for five seasons from 2013-17.
On the women's side, three Columbia players own perfect 8-0 individual records including Julia Masch, Jane Pincus, and Cynthia Cao. Habiba Mohamed (4-2), Eric McGillicuddy (3-3), Nicole Kendall (5-1) and Jui Kalgutkar (5-1) have competed at the top four sports for Columbia thus far.
On the men's side, Callan Hall (2-4), James Wyatt (3-1), Robin Mann (3-3) and Chait Shah (5-3) have occupied the top four positions. Rahul Sehrawat (7-1), Aditya Kankariya (6-2) and Krish Kapur have top records.
On Sunday, Columbia's women's team will take on Stanford in a match scheduled for 10:30 a.m. followed by a combined men's and women's matchup against Harvard, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. Both the Harvard men's and women's teams own perfect 4-0 records and are both ranked No. 1 nationally.
