NEW YORK – The No. 10-ranked Columbia men's squash team suffered a 9-0 defeat at the hands of No. 1 Harvard on Sunday at the SL Green StreetSquash Center.
Sunday's result brings the Lions to 5-5 on the year with a 2-2 record against Ivy League competition. Harvard moves to 5-0.
"The guys that played today played well and had a lot of heart," assistant coach Chris Sachvie said. "On paper we were pretty big underdogs in every match. The top Harvard player is working his way up the world professional rankings over the last couple of years. Callan Hall had a good performance to take the first game and had a lead in the fourth to potentially send it to a fifth game. That was a good result for him after a really good win on Thursday versus Trinity. He's picking up some confidence.
"Luckily, we'll have everyone back in the lineup soon. Being out four of our top seven players obviously made for a tall task today but give full credit to Harvard on a match well deserved."
Hall won his first game against Victor Crouin, 11-6, before Crouin came back to win the second and third by scores of 11-3 and 11-4. The Columbia sophomore took a lead in the fourth and looked headed for a fifth game but was ultimately unable to force the tiebreak.
Harvard won the rest of the matches without dropping another game. Robin Mann fought valiantly from the No. 2 position, pushing Marwan Tarek in a 7-11, 6-11, 8-11 defeat. Vishan Patel came a couple points from taking the second game against George Crowne in the No. 7 slot.
