No. 11 Columbia Men's Squash will head to No. 5 Rochester on Friday, Jan. 31, before hosting No. 7 Dartmouth on Sunday, Feb. 2.
ROCHESTER, N.Y./NEW YORK – With four matches remaining in the season, No. 11 Columbia Men's Squash (5-6, 2-2 IVY) is set to take on a pair of ranked opponents over the weekend, with the first match taking place on Friday, Jan. 31 (4 p.m.) at No. 5 Rochester (4-4) and the second happening at the SL Green Streetsquash Center on Sunday, Feb. 2 (12 p.m.), when Ivy League foe No. 7 Dartmouth (4-5, 0-3 IVY) makes the trip to Harlem, New York to face the Lions.
REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS: Columbia last took to the court on Jan. 26, falling in a tough 6-3 match at then-ranked No. 8 Virginia. In the match, the Lions got wins from Robin Mann (No. 3), Chaitanya Shah (No. 5) and Justin Ghaeli (No. 6). Despite the overall results, Mann's match was extremely impressive, as he dropped the first two sets before storming back to take all three of the final sets to complete a solid comeback, in what was a tough level of competition that Columbia faced in Charlottesville, Virginia.
STRONG LIONS: Throughout the season, Columbia's best performances have come in the heart of the lineup, along with a solid 7-4 record at No. 2. At No. 4, the Lions are 7-4 and at No. 6 Columbia holds an 8-3 record over Columbia's 11 matches competed.
Where the strength has come from is with Ghaeli, Callan Hall and James Wyatt all holding at least .500 records at the No. 2 spot, with Ghaeli and Wyatt sitting at 2-0 when playing in that slot. But in the heart, Columbia has had solid performances from Hugh Camiener, Aditya Kankariya, Krish Kapur and Rahul Sehrawat.
At No. 4, Shah is 3-0 (6-3 overall) and Kankariya holds a 2-1 (6-5 overall) record to power the Lions, while at No. 6, Kapur is 2-0 (5-1 overall), Camiener is 2-0 (4-7 overall) and Sehrawat carries an impressive 3-0 (7-3 overall) record to strengthen Columbia's middle part of the lineup throughout the season.
WHAT THE YELLOWJACKETS BRING: Rochester enters Friday's match with Columbia at 4-4, having lost their previous match at Harvard, on Jan. 26, 9-0. Before dropping the match at Cambridge, Massachusetts, Rochester had ripped off three straight wins, taking down Western Ontario (Jan. 17/7-2), Yale (Jan. 19/7-2) and Dartmouth (Jan. 25/7-2), and those three straight wins, giving the Yellowjackets three wins out of their last four, snapped a three-match losing streak for the Yellowjackets.
Columbia and Rochester last met on Jan. 19, 2019 at the SL Green Streetsquash Center, with Rochester taking that match 6-3. Columbia's last win over Rochester came at Rochester on Jan. 20, 2018, when the Lions took down the Yellowjackets 6-3.
Rochester's best two performers have been Marcus Sim and Abdelrahman Lasheen. Sim, who has played the majority of his matches at No. 5, is 6-2, while Lasheen sits at 5-3, holding onto the No. 4 spot through the season.
WHAT THE BIG GREEN BRING: Dartmouth, who currently sits at 4-5, 0-3 IVY, will head into Sunday's match against Columbia having faced Cornell in Ithaca, New York on Feb. 1. The weekend trip will be Dartmouth's first road trip since taking on George Washington on Jan. 19 at Williamstown, Massachusetts. Over the past four matches, Dartmouth has won three, with the lone loss coming against Rochester on Jan. 25.
The last matchup between Columbia and Dartmouth took place on Jan. 12, 2019 in Hanover, New Hampshire, a 5-4 victory for Dartmouth. Dartmouth's last visit to Harlem resulted in a 7-2 victory for Columbia, which took place on Jan. 13, 2018 and was the last time that Columbia took down Dartmouth.
