NEW YORK — The No. 13 Columbia men's tennis team will compete inside the Dick Savitt Tennis Center for the first time this Sunday, bringing in USF for a 1 p.m. ET matchup.
Columbia (2-0) begins its home slate fresh off an exciting ITA Kickoff Weekend in Knoxville, Tennessee, where the Lions picked up back-to-back victories over No. 14 Oklahoma State and No. 16 Tennessee to open the season and advance to next month's 16-team ITA National Team Indoor Championship for the third-straight season.
Winning the all-important doubles point in both matches, two Lion duos are undefeated in dual meets this season including No. 3 Jackie Tang/Jack Lin on court one, and Jason Lui/Adam Ambrozy on court three. Tang/Lin downed the top-ranked tandem in Oklahoma State's Matej Vocel/Dominik Kellovsky, 6-4, to help Columbia to its season-opening win.
Two Columbia singles players also went undefeated in the opening weekend, as No. 79 Alex Kotzen (court four) and Austen Huang (court six) took down both of their opponents. Also of note, No. 6 Lin nabbed a ranked victory over Oklahoma State's No. 41 Vocel, 6-4, 6-1.
LIONS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
After a pair of top-20 wins last weekend, Columbia jumped five spots from No. 18 to No. 13 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Team Rankings, while also debuting at No. 10 in the Tennis Channel/USTA College Top 25.
The first singles and doubles rankings of the dual season are set to be released next Wednesday, Feb. 5.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
USF enters the matchup with a 4-1 overall record after opening the season with four-straight victories. After advancing to the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match in Gainesville, Florida, with a 4-2 win over Fresno State, the Bulls fell to the second-ranked Florida Gators, 4-0, last Sunday, Jan. 26.
It will be the sixth overall meeting between the two programs, but the first in more than three decades as the last match between the teams was played March 19, 1989, with Columbia taking a 5-4 victory. The Lions are 5-0 in the series.
UP NEXT
Another tough test awaits Columbia as No. 16 Michigan pays a visit to New York next Sunday, Feb. 8.
