Columbia Bounces Back to Beat Brown, 74-60

Lions batter Bears on the glass to improve to 2-2 in Ivy play

NEW YORK – Sienna Durr posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Columbia women's basketball team outrebound Brown by 24 and bounce back to earn an Ivy League weekend split, 74-60, Saturday night inside Levien Gymnasium.

Columbia (11-6, 2-2 Ivy) dominated the glass, 50-26, including 17 offensive rebounds to just five for the Bears (6-11, 0-4 Ivy). Durr, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year, led all players with 12 boards while all eight Lions who stepped on the court grabbed at least three. First year guard Abbey Hsu joined Durr in double figures scoring with 16 points, including 3-of-8 from downtown, while fellow rookie Kaitlyn Davis scored 10.

"I think today there was a much more balanced effort on both ends of the floor," said head coach Megan Griffith in her opening statement to the media. "For us, that's really important. We're at our best when you see a stat sheet and there are numbers all spread out. It means that everybody is involved in all facets of the game. We talk a lot about two-way players here and I felt like yesterday we became very one-dimensional as players … For us and the success we've seen this season, that has not been the thing that has helped us win ball games – when you take the load on your own. It was nice to see our team respond and play team basketball tonight."

Every Lion that stepped on the floor also scored at least four points in the win. First year Carly Rivera added a career-high eight rebounds and five assists.

Columbia led for all but 1:58 but had to keep fighting off pesky Brown most of the night. A 9-0 third-quarter run by the Lions after the Bears had cut the lead to three finally created some separation. An 8-0 run late in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.

"I do think it was a really good response from yesterday," said Durr, who recorded her second double-double of the season. "Obviously, yesterday was not the outcome that we wanted but the great thing about an Ivy weekend is we have another chance the next night. I think we really came out and played together on offense and defense and we got the win."

The Lions hit 8-of-12 from the floor in the fourth quarter after entering the final period shooting 32 percent for the game. They also connected on 3-of-4 from deep, including a triple by Durr that opened up a 13-point lead with 6:37 remaining.

"We're going to miss shots sometimes and we're going to make them," said Hsu when asked about the team's response in the fourth quarter. "We can't rely on that and it all translates back to defense."

Brown held an early 4-3 lead for 41 seconds. The Lions scored the next nine points and never trailed again despite the Bears' repeated comeback efforts. Most of Brown's scoring came from McKenna Dale (18), Justine Gaziano (17) and Maddie Mullin (15), who combined to score all but 10 of the team's points for the game.

"I don't think the defense was perfect at times but I think it was much better than we've seen, especially from last night," Griffith added. "We put a major effort on offensive rebounding today. We had 12 in the first half and ended with 17. We only got 12 points out of them but when you have to play defense for so long it just grinds on you. That was what we tried to do with Brown."

The Lions were up nine at halftime, thanks in large part to a defensive effort that held the Bears to 21 percent shooting in the second quarter.

The win was Columbia's fourth straight in the series over Brown following a season sweep a year ago.

Columbia plays its first road back-to-back next weekend against Penn and Princeton. Both games will be available on ESPN+.
