Lions Down Maryland 6-1 on Road

Columbia wins seven consecutive matches in defeating Big Ten opponent Maryland in College Park.
COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Columbia women's tennis team won seven consecutive matches in clinching a 6-1 road victory over Big Ten opponent Maryland Saturday afternoon at The Tennis Courts at College Park. With the win, Columbia improves to 3-2 in dual matches on the year, while Maryland drops to 4-1.
Columbia claimed the doubles point with back-to-back victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Melissa Sakar and first-year Julia Haynes started the Lions off with a 6-1 win at No. 2 over Maryland's Eva Alexandrova and Adeloa Josefova. First-year Shivani Amineni and junior Jennifer Kerr then gave the Lions a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 victory over Maryland's Zo Kulkarni and Chloe Hamlin.
Columbia won the first three singles matches to clinch the victory. Kerr notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Maryland's Vero Markovic and Amineni made it 3-0 Lions with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 doubles against Maryland's Kate Yemelayanenka. Sakar clinched the Columbia win with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Maryland's Adela Josefova at No. 2 singles.
Sophomore Caitie Sullivan registered a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles to give the Lions a 5-0 lead. After Maryland's Ayana Akli put the Terrapins on the board with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 win at No. 1 singles over Columbia's No. 65 ranked Akanksha Bhan, first-year Julia Hynes notched a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles for Columbia's 6-1 win.
Columbia has claimed five of its last six matchups against Maryland.
Columbia is back in action this weekend when it hosts the ECAC Championship on Friday through Sunday, Feb. 7-9 at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Seven Ivy League schools and UMass will compete in the bracketed tournament. Each team will play three dual matches. More information will be available next week.
