Columbia enters the weekend ranked No. 1 nationally in men's fencing and No. 2 in women's fencing by collegefencing360.com. A new poll will be released prior to the weekend. Nine Ivy League programs—five women's and four men's—are listed in the top-10 of the initial poll. On the women's side, Princeton is No. 1, Columbia is No. 2, Harvard is No. 7, Penn is No. 8 and Cornell is No. 10. In men's, Columbia is No. 1, Harvard is No. 2, Princeton is No. 6, Yale is No. 8 and Penn is No. 9.
Historically, Columbia tops the Ivy League in most team titles in both men's (40 titles in 89 years of competition) and women's (12 titles in 42 years) championships. Columbia has won each of the last six Ivy League titles on the men's side and has captured four of the last five Ivy League titles and each back-to-back outright championships on the women's side. Columbia Head Coach Michael Aufrichtig has guided Columbia to 10 overall titles (six men's and four women's).
Last year, Columbia claimed outright Ivy League dual championships in both men's and women's for the first time since 2008. Nine fencers earned All-Ivy League recognition, six earned First Team All-Ivy honors including returning fencers Andrew Doddo (men's sabre), Sam Moelis (men's foil), Sidarth Kumbla (men's foil), Nora Burke (women's sabre), and Sylvie Binder (women's foil). Binder also captured the 2020 individual women's foil title, her second consecutive individual title. Both teams finished undefeated but the women were 6-0 and the men were 5-0. Following the Ivy League Championships, Columbia returns home to host the George Kolombatovich Memorial Meet on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Dodge Fitness Center. The Lions will take on NYU, Sacred Heart and Vassar at two locations in Dodge Fitness Center including the University Gymnasium "Blue Gym" and the Columbia Fencing Room.
