Columbia Volleyball dropped Friday's Ivy League road match at Yale in straight sets.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Columbia Volleyball (4-7, 1-1 IVY) began its first Ivy League road swing by dropping a tough straight-set match to Yale (8-3, 1-1 IVY) on Friday, Oct. 1, at Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
Columbia was led offensively by Noelle Foster having yet again a great night hitting on the outside, finishing with 11 kills on a career-high .526 hitting percentage. Isa Lamus hit .412, adding 10 kills to join Foster as the only pair of Lions to finish with double-digit kills.
Cadence Gronski added to her Ivy League leading assists total, finishing with 26 assists on the day, adding five digs. On the service line, Vanessa Pan had 11 attempts and was strong, converting all her attempts without committing an error.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first set had 10 tie scores and four lead changes, both match highs, and over the first 30 points those numbers matched up. Strong hitting from Lamus, who had four kills in the set (.286) and four digs across the set from Pan kept Columbia in the set throughout those opening 30 points.
The final tie in the set was at 16-16, following the last lead the Lions held in the set, thanks to kills from Lamus and Logan Harlock. But following the 16-16 tie, Yale began to take control of the set and Columbia would not be able to slow down the Bulldogs over the remainder of the set.
Entering the second set, Columbia was determined to start strong, and they did that with power attacks from Harlock, Foster and Lamus, who each collected at least two kills over the first 23 points. Columbia held a 14-9 lead just before the midway point of the set, but unfortunately for Columbia the Bulldogs would put together a 10-point run to flip the score and that run would propel the Bulldogs to the second set win.
In the third, and final set, Foster put together her best set of the night, finishing with five kills on .625 hitting, while a solid .333 hitting on three kills from Lamus were both bright spots for the Lions in the final set, the score was not. The Lions were unable to crack double digits in the score until late in the set, and for Columbia it would be a bit too little too late as Yale controlled the score and action of the third set from the beginning. The third set win for Yale gave them a straight set win over Columbia.
GAME NOTES: Lamaus' 10 kills is fourth time this season she has reached double digits in kills and the second time in her career she has collected at least 10 kills against Ivy League competition … Gronski now has an Ivy League high 411 assists so far this season … Foster's .526 hitting percentage is a career-high with at least 10 attacks.
