Columbia Volleyball dropped its weekend opening match at Dartmouth in straight sets.
HANOVER, N.H. — In the opening match of its Ivy League weekend swing, Columbia Volleyball (4-11, 1-5 IVY) dropped its Friday, Oct. 15 match at Dartmouth (9-6, 1-5 IVY) in straight sets.
For the third straight match Shari Stenglein recorded a double-double, leading the Lions in assists (25) and digs (12). Noelle Foster posted a team and match-high 13 kills on .222 hitting and at the net, Soah Franklin had another strong night finishing with four total blocks.
As a team, thanks to Franklin's blocks and Isa Lamus' three blocks, the Lions protected the net better than their opponent for the second straight match. Finishing with six total blocks, while Dartmouth recorded only three.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first two sets were controlled by Dartmouth, with the Big Green taking both sets by a score of 25-16 and 25-17 respectively. Over the two sets, the Lions were done in by errors, collecting 27 total errors over the first two sets, compared to only 17 by the Big Green.
Despite the outcome of the first two sets, Columbia came out in the third set looking to battle to the end, and they were led in the set by an explosion of offense from Lamus, who recorded six of her eight total kills in the third set alone. In the first two sets, after the opening points, Dartmouth pulled away, the third set went differently.
Midway through the set, things were knotted up at 13-13, and that's when Lamus came alive. She recorded the next four kills, and over that stretch it pushed Columbia ahead to 19-16. And following a Foster kill, she to had six in the set, the Lions cracked 20 points first and had themselves a 20-17 lead late in the third set.
But unfortunately for the Lions, Dartmouth would stay with Columbia and following a rare bad set from Stenglein, the Big Green's Emma Engstrom took to the serve with the Lions holding a slight 22-21 lead. The Big Green, behind Engstrom, scored the next four points and a kill from Ellie Blain ended the match with the Big Green winning in straight sets.
