Lions Drop Match To Rider In Four Sets
10/20/2021 10:13:00 PM | Volleyball
Columbia Volleyball returns to Ivy League play with a visit to Cornell on Sat., Oct. 23.
NEW YORK — In a midweek non-conference matchup on Schiller Court at Levien Gym, Columbia Volleyball (5-12, 2-5 IVY) fell in four sets to Rider (11-10, 8-3 MAAC) in what was the final non-conference match for the Lions this season.
Columbia was led by a strong performance from Logan Harlock who finished with a match and career-high 19 kills on .348 hitting. She was joined by Isa Lamus (14) and Noelle Foster (12) who each added double-digit kills to the mix. While once again on the block and at the net Soah Franklin was a force, finishing with four total blocks.
"Logan played really well for us on the right and Soah did a nice job blocking," said head coach Allison Keeley. "A midweek match was a new challenge for the team, and we just didn't play our best. But positively it did give us the opportunity to learn and grow before returning to Ivy League play and our upcoming match against Cornell."
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first two sets, which went to Rider, had the same final score of 25-23, but down the stretch in both sets the Lions and the Broncs were close with only a few points being the difference.
At the end of the first set, Columbia battled back against set point twice, before a service error from Emily Teehan gave Rider their set point. While at the tail end of the second set, the Lions had knotted things up at 23-23, before a pair of Columbia attack errors again gave Rider the points, they needed to win the set.
In the third set, the Lions really shinned and showed that they had some fight left in them. Powered by five kills on .385 hitting by Harlock and 16 assists from Shari Stenglein, the Lions controlled the action from the beginning, quickly jumping out to a 10-4 lead.
Throughout the set Columbia was strong across the board, recording the least errors committed in all four sets, and holding Rider to a .139 hitting percentage. The efficiency was evident when Columbia had already cracked 18 points before Rider even made it to 10, and the large lead was plenty for Columbia as they scored the final three points, on kills by Harlock, Lamus and Teehan to win the set 25-14.
During the fourth set, Columbia's errors again became a factor, as midway through the set a service error and a pair of attack errors allowed Rider to pull ahead to 10-7. The Broncs never gave the lead back and over the rest of the set the Lions committed five errors, including a service error at 18-14 which unfortunately for Columbia stopped any comeback momentum they had built up over the previous points. And despite the Lions fighting hard with their backs against the wall, surviving four match points, the deficit was too much to overcome and with a 25-21 fourth set win Rider finished off the four-set win.
GAME NOTES: Harlock finished with a career-high 19 kills … Harlock's .348 hitting percentage was a career-high … Stenglein finished with a career-high 47 assists … It was Stenglein's fourth double-double of the season (47 assists/13 digs).
