Columbia Cross Country's men and women each finished fourth at the Ivy League Heps, with a pair of Lion women and one Lion man earning All-Ivy honors.
PRINCETON, N.J. — A pair of Columbia Cross Country women, highlighted by Phoebe Anderson's fourth place finish, earned All-Ivy League honors, while on the men's side Tyler Berg finished 11th to earn All-Ivy honors as the Lion women (6K) and men (8K) both posted fourth place finishes overall at the 2021 Ivy League Cross Country Heps held at West Windsor Fields on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Anderson earned first team All-Ivy League honors with her fourth-place finish, while Nikki Vanasse finished 11th to get herself second team All-Ivy League honors. Berg's 11th place finish gave him second team All-Ivy League honors, while as a team the Lion women had three finishers inside the top 25, and the men had a pair finish inside the top 20.
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN): Anderson's time of 20:38.6 was not only a top five finish, but a personal best time in the young first year's first taste of the Ivy League Heps, and overall, her performance as the best finish by a Lion on both sides. As for Vanasse, she clocked a personal best time of 21:02.6, giving the Lion women their pair of top 15 finishers in the race.
Columbia's next three finishers posted top 30 finishes, with Sofia Camacho clocking a 21:24.8 (21st), Sofia Matson running a 21:34.1 (26th) and Linnaea Kavulich finishing 27th with a time of 21:35.2.
"While as a team we were disappointed with not being able to defend our title," said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Daniel Ireland. "The women competed very hard and raced tough. I was especially pleased with senior women and how they competed at what is their last Ivy League Cross Country Heps race. The season is not over, and our women will continue to work towards finishing the year strong.
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN): Berg, who earned first team All-Ivy League honors in 2019, clocked a personal best time of 24:11.1 on his way to a second straight Heps with All-Ivy League honors and his 11th place finish. The next two top finishers for the Lion men, David Vorbach (24:42.0) and Julian Baeza (25:03.8) each finished inside the top 30 with Vorbach coming in at 23rd and Baeza, running a personal best time, crossed the line 30th.
"We were very happy our fourth-place finish today," said Ireland. "Any other year we would have been disappointed but with only two upperclassmen and eight men competing at their first Ivy League Heps, this was a very solid day. I am super excited about what the future holds for this group of young Lion men, both for the remainder of this season and the years to come."
