Columbia Volleyball fell in four sets at home to the Harvard Crimson on Friday night on Schiller Court at Levien Gym.
NEW YORK — Columbia Volleyball (5-16, 2-9 IVY) fell in four sets to Harvard (10-10, 7-4 IVY) on a Friday night Ivy League match on Schiller Court at Levien Gym.
Both Emily Teehan and Noelle Foster led Columbia in kills with 12 each, while Isa Lamus added 10 to give the Lions three in double-digit kills on the night. Teehan added 10 digs for a double-double, while Shari Stenglein finished with a match-high 33 assists and Vanessa Pan recorded a team-high 14 digs and three service aces.
The Lions did take the first set, but a strong presence at the net for Harvard, the Crimson finished with 11 total blocks and Columbia's .159 hitting percentage allowed the Crimson into the match as they took the final three sets to win the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Lions came out of the gate on fire and seven kills in the first set from Foster gave Columbia a great start to the match. During that first set, the Lions pulled away early, breaking the final tie of the set at 7-7 thanks to a Foster kill. Yooni Park took to the service line and kills from Lamus and Teehan pushed the Lions ahead 10-8.
Harvard would get within three points, at 18-15, but Columbia would score the next three points, thanks to strong serving from Stenglein and kills from Foster to pull away from the Crimson and take the opening set 25-18 and an early 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Crimson were able to get back into the match. The Lions struggled hitting in the set, finishing with a percentage of .073 and nine attack errors, as Harvard controlled the score throughout and tied things up at 1-1 following the 25-16 second set win.
The third set was the closest of the four, with the Lions controlling the action early taking a 16-14 lead midway through as they looked to take back the overall lead. But over the next four points, Harvard scored three, with a pair of service aces from Corinne Furey, and it pushed them in front of Columbia at 18-17.
Columbia counterpunched right back and over the final nine points, the score was tired three times, and the Lions battled set point twice to keep things alive. But a kill from Furey and an ace by Olivia Cooper gave the Crimson a 26-24 third set win and it extended their overall lead in the match to 2-1.
Stenglein racked up seven assists in the fourth set, and the Lions were the first to crack 10 points, jumping ahead of Harvard to start and a kill from Lamus put the score at 13-9. But over the next handful of points Harvard would crawl back into the match, but at 17-14 the Lions still held the lead.
At that point four straight errors from the Lions allowed Harvard to catch and pass them, and the hole was not one that Columbia could climb out of. The Lions did fight off a match point, but a long serve from Pan was the final point for the Crimson as they took the final set, 25-21 and the match 3-1.
GAME NOTES: Teehan's double-double was her fifth of the season … Soah Franklin finished with four blocks.
