NEW YORK — Columbia Rowing mourns the passing of Larry Gluckman, who passed away early on March 30, 2021, in Burlington, Vermont, he was 72 years old.
Gluckman served on the Heavyweight Rowing coaching staff, and during the 1970-71 season Gluckman took over the head coaching duties, and while he was at Columbia, he earned his master's degree in Special Education. He was a US Rowing national team, Pan-Am, and Olympic athlete, along with serving as a US Rowing national team and Olympic coach. Gluckman also coached in the Ivy League, spending time at Princeton and Dartmouth after leaving Columbia.
"Larry's impact on the programs he coached was as large as his personality," said Columbia Heavyweight Rowing Head Coach Scott Alwin. "The ripple effects of his coaching will continue for decades to come, and he made places he coached at better for every single person in those boathouses. The sport of rowing will miss him enormously."
"Larry presented often at the Joy of Sculling event, and he was a creative coach who found ways to make every team he coached better," said Columbia Lightweight Rowing Head Coach Nich Lee Parker. "It's a sad loss for the rowing community."
Gluckman is survived by his wife Sara and daughters Meg, Kate, and Anna.
