
Trio of Lions Headed to Young Women's National Championships

Kelsey Farkas, Jaimie McCormick and Allison Smith will compete at the prestigious event from June 15-20.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — For the first time in program history, three members of the Columbia field hockey program will participate at the 2021 Young Women's National Championship. Kelsey Farkas and Allison Smith, who have three combined years of experience at the event, will be joined by Jaimie McCormick this year when the competition commences on June 15.
After the cancellation of the 2020 edition, the return of the Young Women's National Championship (YWNC) will feature a 10-team pool of top collegiate and post-collegiate athletes and members of the current Rise, U.S U-21 Women's National Team, National Development Team and USWNT. Each team will play three pool games following the International Hockey Federation's FIH Hockey Pro League points system (Win = 3; Draw = 1; Loss = 0; Shootout Win = 1). Crossover games on the final day will be how teams finish in terms of ranking to determine the placements.
Each of the Lions will play on different teams. McCormick will play for Team Pride, Farkas joins Team Liberty and Smith will represent Team Dream. Games will take place at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center.
Farkas will make her third appearance at the YWNC is set to return to the Lions in the fall after taking a semester off during the 2019-20 academic year, thus preserving a year of athletic eligibility at Columbia. After a strong performance at the 2019 YWNC's, she was named to the U.S. Development Team in 2020. Farkas has been a three-year starter who has been named All-Ivy League and NFHCA All-Mideast Region twice. She has registered 11 goals and nine assists in 47 career games. Additionally, Farkas led the squad with eight goals and 20 points in the 2019 campaign.
Smith also had a strong showing at the 2019 YWNC's, earning a spot on the U-21 National Team. As a sophomore, Smith racked up eight goals, which tied for the team lead with Farkas, on her way to earning honorable mention All-Ivy League honors and a second team All-NFHCA Mideast Region selection.
McCormick has started 33 career games for Columbia, netting six goals and an assist for 13 points. She tallied four goals during her sophomore campaign, including a pair of game-winners. This will mark McCormick's debut at the Young Women's National Championships.
