LEWISTON, Maine — Columbia men's squash started off the 2022 calendar year with a comfortable, 9-0, victory over No. 21 Bates College Tuesday morning on the campus of the Bobcats.
The final outcome was never in doubt, as the Lions won 27 of the 28 total games through the nine scoring matches.
Velavan Senthilkumar took the top court for the sixth-ranked Lions and set the tone with a dominant 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 victory over Jesper Phillips.
"You can't underestimate any team, no matter the rankings, and so I thought the men did well," Columbia interim head coach
Joanne Schickerling said. "Bates came out with nothing to lose and really pushed us. When it came down to it, we stayed focused and closed the matches out in a professional way."
There were a few competitive matches on the day.
Jacob Bulbulia had to grind through three close games to take care of Jairaj Singh, 11-9, 14-12, 11-9, at the No. 8 position. Up at the No. 3,
Harold Castiaux split his first two games with Harris Ramlee, but went on to dominate game three, 11-1, and close out his match in four.
Ryan Chen won in three games at No. 6, which included a perfect 11-0 score line in the second game.
"We had a week of being back on campus so it was really good to have an official match," Schickerling added. "It really got us all ready for Trinity and Yale."
The Lions will have an opportunity to climb the College Squash Association National Ranking this weekend, as they welcome No. 4 Trinity and No. 5 Yale to the SL Green StreetSquash Center.
