No. 6 Columbia Sees Winning Streak Snapped by No. 2 Trinity, 6-3

Mohamed sisters stay undefeated in duals

NEW YORK — The No. 6 Columbia women's squash team won each of the top three matches but couldn't come away with any wins from the rest of its lineup, as No. 2 Trinity defeated the Lions, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at the SL Green StreetSquash Center.

Columbia (4-2) had its four-game winning streak come to an end. The Lions had defeated Drexel, Cornell, Williams and Bates in succession dating back to December 3. Meanwhile, Trinity improved its undefeated record to 4-0.

Sophomore Farida Mohamed won Columbia's first point of the match with a comeback victory in the No. 1 match. After Malak Ashraf Kamal led 2-1, Mohamed dominated game four, 11-3, to go to a fifth. The close affair was eventually won by Mohamed, who improved to 4-0 in her matches on the season with an 11-9 game-five win.

Trinity earned its first point with a three-game win by Habiba Dawood at No. 7 and took the lead in the match when Madeleine Hylland got by Sarah Cao in five games at the No. 4. Cao decisively won the first game, 11-3, and bounced back from consecutive 11-6 losses to win the fourth, 11-8, but was denied by Hylland, 11-8, in the fifth to but the Bantams ahead 2-1 in the match.

Trinity swept the second round of matches to get to five points and clinch the team victory. Columbia's only game victory through those three matches came from Renee Chan at No. 8, who won her second game against Nanna Carleke, 11-4, but was defeated in four games.

Despite the team result already being decided, the Lions fought hard and picked up two more points with wins by first-year Simmi Chan at No. 2 and senior Habiba Mohamed at No. 3. Mohamed battled to a three-game win, 11-7, 11-8, 15-13, while Chan had to grind out a five-game result against Jana Safy, 9-11, 11-9, 11-2, 6-11, 11-8. Mohamed's dual record improved to 5-0.

Columbia returns to StreetSquash on Sunday to take on No. 4 Yale (4-0). The match begins at 12 p.m. ET.
