Lions Excel on Second Day of MLK

Columbia captured five wins on the second day of Georgia Tech's MLK Invitational.
ATLANTA, GA -- Columbia earned three singles and two doubles victories against the No. 14 University of North Carolina on the second day of the MLK Invitational, hosted by Georgia Tech. Competition will conclude tomorrow, Jan. 17, at the Ken Byers Athletic Complex as the Lions meet No. 23 Illinois at 8:00 A.M..
Sophomore #12 Alex Kotzen continued to lead the Lions, collecting his second singles win of the week against Mac Kiger. Kotzen put Kiger away in two sets, 6-2, 6-4. First-year #85 Hugo Hashimoto also won in two, defeating Anuj Watane 6-4, then 4-3 winning by retirement.
Sophomore Ishaan Ravichander battled through three sets, taking the first from Peter Murphy 6-3, before cedeing the second 4-6. Ravichander repeated his first set success to win the match 6-3 in the third.
Max Westphal fell to Illinois' Kweisi Kenyatte after winning the first set 6-3. Kenyatte forced a third set with a close 6-7 victory in the second set before taking down Westphal 6-7 in the final set.
Westphal teamed up with Alex Finkelstein to take down #20 Casey Kania/Logan Zapp 6-4 in the day's first doubles match. Henry Ruger and Jayden Templeman also contributed victories, defeating the mixed team of UNC's Anuj Watane and Columbia's Ben Gollin.
