Lions pay tribute to special senior class
NEW YORK – The 27th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team made quick work of No. 73 Dartmouth, taking down the Big Green 4-1 at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. With the win, the Lions moved one match closer to defending their Ivy League crown.
With the win, Columbia extends its winning streak to seven matches. The Lions improved to 16-6 in duals this year and are now 6-0 in the Ivy League. Sunday's win against the Big Green sets up a showdown next weekend at Cornell when the Lions can defend their Ivy League title for the third consecutive year.
The doubles point once again proved to be dramatic. Dartmouth jumped out to a commanding lead in all three matches early on. The duo of Denny Bao and Kornel Halmos got the Big Green halfway to the point with a 6-3 win over Thanaphat Boosarawongse and Abhishek Thorat on court No. 3.
On court two, Sachin Palta and Andrew Ena rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to win it 7-5.
On the main court, the Lions' duo of Michael Zheng and Nicolas Kotzen were trailing love-40 in the deciding point, but rallied back to win the point and force a tiebreaker. The seniors were able to hold on and secure the doubles point with a 7-6(6) win over the 79th-ranked duo of Henry Ren and Miles Groom.
In singles play, Zheng quickly dispatched Ren in a straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-1, to give Columbia a 2-0 lead.
The Big Green cut the deficit in half when Kornel Halmos defeated Thanaphat Boosarawongse, 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 4.
First-years Aditya Govila and Abhishek Thorat put the match away with wins on No. 5 and No. 6. Govila defeated Leo Pade, 6-3, 7-6(3) to make it 3-1. Throat clinched it with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win on court No. 6.
Kotzen and Palta were both leading in the third set when their matches were abandoned.
