CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Columbia men's and women's squash teams each suffered losses to Harvard by identical scores, 8-1, Saturday afternoon on the Crimson campus.
Columbia's fifth-ranked women's team (5-3, 2-1 Ivy) came into the match with an undefeated Ivy League record as they took on the top-ranked Crimson (7-0, 4-0 Ivy). First-year
Simmi Chan earned Columbia's lone dual victory, ousting Harvard's Marina Stefanoni, 3-1 (11-9, 11-7, 7-11. 11-8). The win was Chan's third straight and improved her dual record to 5-1 on the season, including a perfect 4-0 in the No. 2 position.
On the men's side, No. 6 Columbia (6-4, 0-3 Ivy) saw sophomore
Rutvik Rau come away with a three-game victory in the No. 7 slot. Rau got through his first two games against No. 2 Harvard's (8-1, 3-1 Ivy) Liam Rotzoll without too much trouble, but had to battle through a very tight third game, 14-12, to finish out the victory. The win was Rau's first of the year from the No. 7 position and improved his overall record to 4-2.
The Lions weren't as fortunate with the rest of their matches.
Harold Castiaux, competing at the No. 4, was able to win one of four games against Adam Corcoran.
Zach Nam earned an exhibition win in four games, 11-7, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7, but the rest of the men's matches were all decided in favor of Harvard, all in three games.
Bunny Fox and
Elizabeth Lentz were each able to squeak out a game on the women's side.
Columbia's squash teams move on to Dartmouth to take on the Big Green on Sunday. The women's match starts at 11 a.m., followed immediately by the men's match around 1:30 p.m.
