Lions grind out three five-game victories to earn weekend split
HANOVER, N.H. — No. 5 Columbia bounced back to defeat No. 11 Dartmouth, 8-1, in women's squash action Sunday afternoon at the Berry Squash Courts.
The Lions (6-3, 3-1 Ivy) earned three quick points in one-sided decisions, as Farida Mohamed, Erica McGillicuddy and Bunny Fox all swept their matches and took less than 20 minutes each to do so. Those results put the Lions on top, 3-0.
Junior Elizabeth Lentz completed the first round of matches with a comeback at the No. 8, coming back from 2-1 down to win her final two games, 11-8, 11-8. Letnz's win put Columbia a point from victory and Simmi Chan took the honors, bouncing back from an 11-8 loss in game one to blow past Jesse Brownell, 11-2, 11-3, 11-6, for the win.
"I thought the team responded really well today," Columbia interim head coach Joanne Schickerling said. "There were some really tough and tight games and we were able to stay focused when we needed to be. I thought Sarah, Ellie and Daisy [Lentz] did really well to close out their matches in five."
Competing at the No. 3, Sarah Cao battled through four close games before slamming the door shut on Claire Aube, 11-3, for a five-game win. Ellie McVeigh nearly won her match in four, falling 15-13 in that game, but was dominant in game five, 11-5, to finish off the match.
Columbia will play at home for the final time this season on Friday when it welcomes No. 9 Penn to the SL Green StreetSquash Center. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
