Women’s Squash Posts Record Ivy Season

Lions clipped by No. 3 Princeton, 5-4, in regular season finale

PRINCETON, N.J. — The No. 5 Columbia women's squash team completed the 2021-22 regular season on Sunday with a narrow, 5-4, loss to No. 3 Princeton at Jadwin Gym.

With Sunday's result, Columbia will head to the CSA Team Nationals with a record of 7-4 overall and 4-2 against Ivy League competition. The team's Ivy League record marks the program's best winning percentage (.667) in team history.

"The team has continued to grow and get stronger with every match," Columbia interim head coach Joanne Schickerling said. "We are still building, learning and improving with every match we play. This team is incredibly motivated and will use the momentum they've built from the last few weeks to train and work even harder as we prepare to peak for Nationals."

Columbia's victories on Sunday came from Farida Mohamed, Simmi Chan, Habiba Mohamed and Erica McGillicuddy. Farida Mohamed played in the No. 1 match and grabbed her third straight dual win, improving to 8-1 on the season with a convincing three-game sweep of Andrea Toth, 11-4, 11-7, 11-0. Her older sister, Habiba, polished off her unbeaten regular season with an individual record of 9-0 by sweeping Raneem El Torky, 11-4, 11-8, 11-4. First-year Simmi Chan also swept her match at the No. 2 spot, 11-2, 11-5, 11-3.

McGillicuddy continued her recent hot streak in the No. 5 match. The junior from Toronto won her third consecutive dual match, grabbing momentum with a 12-10 decision in game one before pulling it off in five, 12-10, 5-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-5.

The Lions will now prepare for CSA Nationals. The Team Championships are scheduled for Feb. 25-27 up in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
