NEW YORK – Trailing 1-0 with less than a minute left in fourth quarter, Columbia field hockey pulled off an improbable comeback, scoring twice in the final 45 seconds to defeat the Dartmouth Big Green 2-1 in front of a ruckus crowd at Baker Athletics Complex on Friday night.
A defensive battle until the final whistle, all three goals were scored in the fourth quarter.
Katie Wimmer put in another stellar performance in the cage, stopping six shots, adding a spectacular save at the end of the third quarter to keep the teams even at zero.
Staring down a shutout loss, head coach
Katie DeSandis pulled
Katie Wimmer with just over two minutes remaining, leaving the Lions cage vulnerable. Pulling the keeper usually gives a team a one-person advantage, but the Lions were already playing with nine on the field because of a yellow card at the 5:39 mark.
Elizabeth Brissette came up big for the Lions for the second time in four games. The hero from the win over Brown two weeks ago evened the game tonight at the 45-second mark, getting the assist from
Ellie Decker.
The Lions were not done. Wimmer went back into the net and the teams were once again at even strength. A Dartmouth foul with 10 seconds remaining gave the Lions the ball just outside of the shooting circle.
Maya Walker played the ball to
Meredith Heaney. Heaney found
Lily Baker and Baker buried it past the Big Green keeper with just four seconds left on the game clock.
Up next, the Lions stay home, hosting New Hampshire on Sunday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. The Lions seven seniors:
Lucy Holzinger,
Elizabeth Brissette,
Meredith Heaney,
Ellie Decker,
Frederique Fyhr,
Sarah Considine, and
Zoe Metalios will be honored before the game for senior day.
