Mueller earns 1,000th head-to-head coaching victory
HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — Columbia men's golf welcomed Trinity College Dublin to The Saint Andrew's Golf Club for a fall exhibition Friday afternoon. The Lions were victorious, winning a mixed match-play competition, 3-1.
Friday's competition featured nine holes of four-ball and nine more of alternate shot. Each match consisted of two players from each team. All eight Lions participated, with the pairings consisting of Alvin Kwak and DJ Francey, Nathan Han and Willie Sung, Pat Healy and George Rubelsky, and Wyatt McGovern and Darren Pang.
"I think today was really fun and a nice way to end the season," Columbia Director of Golf Rich Mueller said. "The different format made it unusual and fun, and there was a lot of camaraderie amongst the players. It put an emphasis on teamwork and I'm not surprised that our guys were able to get the result."
"Trinity had reached out over the summer to ask to play a match. We take a foreign tour every four years and understand the importance of having that experience. It was nice to be able to provide that opportunity for them."
Adding to the day, Mueller earned his 1,000th head-to-head coaching victory as Columbia's Director of Golf. Mueller came to Columbia in 2005, amassing 969 head-to-head wins between tournament and match play entering the fall.
"It's super special to be able to do it at home and with this group," said Mueller, who has won four Ivy League titles with the Lions. "This group is competitive, thoughtful and mindful. I'm humbled and it was special to be able to do it today."
Columbia begins its spring championship season Feb. 18-19 at the Savannah Harbor Invitational.
