Columbia Drops Midweek Meeting With Hofstra

Ryan Kipness scored Columbia's lone goal of the game, his first of the season.

NEW YORK — On a chilly Tuesday evening at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, Columbia men's soccer (1-5-3) dropped its midweek non-conference meeting with Hofstra (7-2-1), 5-1, in a game that saw three goals scored from the spot.

Columbia's lone goal came in the 34th minute on a penalty kick taken and scored by Ryan Kipness. It was his first goal of the season, and second of his career. But Hofstra added a pair of goals from the spot to pull away from the Lions over the first 15 minutes of the second half, creating a deficit that the Lions could not recover from.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Hofstra got things started with a goal to open the match, pushing one past the Columbia goalkeeper, Andreas Zamanian who was making his first career start, in the eighth minute. But the Lions had answers for Hofstra and battled to win back the possession and began to push the envelope in the Hofstra box.

The positive play by the Lions led to a foul being committed in the box by Hofstra's Francesco Perinelli and after Kipness knotted the score up at 1-1, the Lions and Pride played out the final 11 minutes of the period to a 1-1 tie.

During the second half, Hofstra pulled away, scoring a pair of penalty kicks roughly three minutes apart. The first came in the 56th minute to put Hofstra up 2-1 before the second penalty kick came at the 59th minute to extend the Pride lead to 3-1.

Hofstra would add two more goals, scoring in the 64th and 66th minute, to put the final score at 5-1.

UP NEXT: Columbia returns to league play with a visit to Harvard on Saturday, October 8. The Lions return home the following weekend when they welcome Princeton on October 15.
