Swimming, soccer and squash in action
NEW YORK — This week's edition of "Lions on the Road" features four teams competing over Saturday and Sunday. Men's swimming and men's soccer take on a pair of Ivy League opponents, while men's and women's squash get the season started against Virginia.
Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus. Be sure to access each team's website on gameday to keep up with all of the action as it happens.
MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
Following the Lions' home meet against Princeton on Friday, the team will travel to take on Yale Saturday afternoon. Columbia started the season 2-0 after topping Army at home and Penn on the road during its opening weekend. The Bulldogs are also coming off two wins of their own, defeating Brown and UMass. The meet between the Lions and the other Ivy League school will be streamed on ESPN+.
MEN'S SOCCER
The men's soccer team looks to conclude the 2022 season with what would be a huge win, taking on No. 16 Cornell on Saturday in Ithaca. This will be the Lions' second straight match against a nationally ranked opponent. Last Saturday, they battled No. 15 Penn hard but surrendered two quick goals in the final few minutes of the first half, falling by a score of 2-0. Columbia will be looking for its first victory in Ithaca since defeating the Big Red, 2-0, back in 2017.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S SQUASH
Sunday features the season openers for Columbia's nationally ranked men's and women's squash teams. Both teams will be competing together against Virginia in Charlottesville. The fourth-ranked women meet the eighth-ranked Cavaliers, looking to avenge a narrow, 5-4, loss from last year's season opener in New York. The Lions return Ivy League Rookie of the Year and First Team selection Farida Mohamed, as well as First Team All-Ivy selection Simmi Chan. Meanwhile, the ninth-ranked men's team hopes to take down No. 5 UVA, which they were able to do last season by a score of 6-3 in New York. The Lions lost six members to graduation last year, including four that were consistently in the top nine.
