The senior broke a seven-year record in Columbia's home opener
NEW YORK – Senior Karen Liu set a pool record in the 200 butterfly and won the 200 breaststroke in Columbia's home opening meet against Yale. Despite six individual race wins, the Bulldogs came up victorious, 179-121. Also victorious in winning two races were Olivia Jubin and Emily MacDonald.
"I was pleased with our team's spirit today," head coach Diana Caskey said. "They enjoyed competing at home, and we were closer than we've been against Yale in a long time in many events. Overall, it was a good outing for us."
Liu became the first woman to eclipse 2:00 in the 200 butterfly at Uris Natatorium, clocking in at 1:59.15 on her way to victory. Later in the competitions, Liu took the top spot in the 200 breaststroke, turning in a performance of 2:14.71.
Jubin claimed the Lions' first victory of the evening in the 200 freestyle. Jubin touched the wall in 1:51.01, just .06 in front of Yale's Raime Jones in a thrilling race.
In the 50 free, MacDonald turned in a winning time of 23.46 and received points from Sally Ma (23.48 – third) and Isabelle Arevalo (23.65 – fourth) as the Lions tried to cut into their early deficit. MacDonald's next event (51.03) edged Yale's Caroline McCurdy by just .02 seconds to come up victorious in the 100-freestyle coming out of the diving break.
After Liu's second victory, Yale won the next two races and secured enough points to clinch the matchup.
Columbia is back in the water next Friday, November 18, when it faces Harvard at 1 p.m. in Cambridge.
