Winter sports in full swing this weekend
NEW YORK — This weekend's edition of "Lions on the Road" features seven Columbia athletics programs. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus. Be sure to access each team's website on gameday to keep up with all of the action as it happens.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
Last time out, the women's swimming and diving team traveled to Massachusetts to take on the Harvard Crimson on Friday, November 18. The Lions were defeated, 191-106, despite some great individual performances. Aziza Ganihanova took home first place in the 1,000-free, while Karen Liu secured first place in the 100-breast. Emily McDonald also had a solid afternoon, taking second in both the 50-free and 100-free. This weekend, the team will compete in the ECAC Winter Invite at Nassau County Aquatic Center for its midseason invitational.
MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
This weekend, the men's swimming and diving team will travel to New Jersey to take part in the Princeton Invite. The team will take on a pool of tough opponents, including the host Princeton Tigers who are 4-1 on the season and coming off a 185-115 victory over the Penn Quakers. Last weekend, Columbia suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Harvard, 168-132. Jonathan Suckow continued his run of dominance, setting a new pool record with a score of 435.45 in the 3-meter. Meanwhile, Adam Wu won three individual events, including the 500-free, 1000-free, and 200-fly.
WRESTLING
Columbia will send 10 wrestlers to the Cliff Keen Invitational, a two-day event being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Known for being one of the toughest tournaments in the country, the Lions will be joined by 36 other schools, including Ivy League foes Cornell and Harvard. Columbia enters the weekend in Vegas with two ranked nationally by either FloWrestling and Intermat in the latest polls. In the 165 division, Joshua Ogunsanya is No. 10 (Intermat) and No. 12 (FloWrestling). Matt Kazimir checks in at No. 24 (FloWrestling) and No. 26 (InterMat) at 141. After his win at Ohio State on Nov. 18, Lennox Wolak is also receiving honorable mention status.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The men's and women's track and field teams will begin their indoor seasons on Friday afternoon at the Rutgers Holiday Classic, taking place at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York. The following day, members of the team will head up to West Point to compete in the Crowell Open at Army's Gillis Field House. The team welcomes back a ton of contributors from last indoor season, including Phoebe Anderson, Kimmi Woods, Seneca Willen, Nikki Vanasse, Juan Zarate-Sanchez, Justin O'Toole, Michael Danzi, Alexis Knight, Amara Onyeukwu, Elena Wilson, and Sydney Goldson, who were all named All-Ivy League last year. The teams are coming off a cross country season that saw Victoria Patterson, Phoebe Anderson and Elia Ton-That advance to NCAA Nationals on the women's side, while senior Tyler Berg ran at Nationals on the men's side.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S SQUASH
Columbia's top-10-ranked squash teams will head to Philadelphia on Friday to take on Drexel. The No. 9 men's team (0-1) battles the No. 7 Dragons (2-1), while the No. 8 women's team (0-1) will look to upset their third-ranked opponent (3-0). This will be the first contest for Columbia's two squash teams since the season opener on November 13, which saw the men drop a close contest to No. 5 Virginia, 6-3, while the women fell in another close call to the eighth-ranked Cavaliers, 5-4. Ivy League Rookie of the Year Farida Mohamed and returning First Team honoree Simmi Chan expect to head the women's lineup.
