Ivy League Play Commences Against Yale Saturday

The Lions play the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Levien Gym
NEW YORK - Columbia men's basketball (5-10) begins Ivy League play against Yale (10-3) on Saturday, December 31, for a 12 p.m. start on Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium. Fans can catch all of the action live on ESPN+.
OPENING TIP-OFF
• Columbia and Yale will be the first Ivy League teams to tip-off in a slate of four games in the league's opening conference weekend.
• The Lions erased a 16-point second half deficit to force overtime, but fell to UMES 74-67 Wednesday to close non-conference play. Zine Eddine Bedri scored a team-high 14 ponts to go with seven rebounds in the defeat.
• Next week, Columbia embarks on a traditional Ivy League back-to-back weekend when it hosts Princeton (Fri., Jan. 6) and Penn (Sat., Jan. 7).

YALE'S STATUS
The Bulldogs have had an extended layoff after topping Monmouth on Dec. 22. Yale has spent an extended time on the road this season, with eight of its first 13 games away from home. The Bulldogs have not had a home game since Nov. 30 against Howard. Matt Knowling is pacing the squad, averaging 16.2 points and 4.7 rebounds.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Yale leads the all-time series with Columbia, 126-115. The Bulldogs have won four-straight and 11 of the last 12 meetings. Last year, Yale claimed an 83-72 victory at home and completed the season sweep with an 84-59 triumph in New York.
COLUMBIA IN IVY LEAGUE OPENERS
The Lions are 31-34 all-time in Ivy League openers. Under head coach Jim Engles, Columbia is 3-2 in Ancient Eight debuts. This is the first time since 2002 that the Lions and Bulldogs will kick off conference play. Columbia is 35-26 in its home conference debuts and 19-10 when starting the Ancient Eight slate in Levien Gymnasium.
