SENDING OFF THE SENIORS: Columbia will honor its four seniors in-between the two duals as the Lions celebrate the careers of Brian Bonino, Joe Franzese, Spencer Good and Sam Webster.
BRIAN BONINO: A senior captain and leader of the Lions since stepping foot on Morningside ahead of the 2017 season, Bonino has truly made an impact during his time at Columbia. Collecting 22 wins over three seasons of competition, Brian has kept his love and drive for the sport of wrestling alive and well, despite having to push through two seasons off the mat.
He has been awarded recently by collecting a pair of ranked wins, the first two of his career, which has led to him earning his first career honorable mention from FloWrestling.
JOE FRANZESE: Franzese has put together a solid career on Morningside since coming to the Lions in 2018, but it's his sense of humor that has truly made the difference in the Columbia wrestling room. Collecting 25 wins over his career, Franzese has made sure to keep the spirits up during a time of unprecedented hardship for "The Nation's Oldest Program".
Being one of the taller members of the squad, Franzese's absence will be noticed in the room.
SPENCER GOOD: If you've watched a Columbia Wrestling home broadcast this season, then you've heard the voice of Spencer Good as he used his expertise to describe the bout on the mat. A key member of making sure the guys are always ready, Good has always kept things light and worked hard through his four seasons as a Lion.
Good collected 10 wins over three years of competition, including finishing seventh at the recent Messiah Open, and he has shown that he knows a thing or two about being behind the mic.
SAM WEBSTER: Hailing from Minnesota, Webster has always shown up to the wrestling room ready to work. Currently in the middle of a career-year, collecting a career-high seven wins so far this season giving him 13 over three years of competition, Sam finished third at the recent Messiah Open and during the 2019 season his tech fall win helped Columbia knock off Bloomsburg in a dual.
His willingness to stay focused his goals while helping his fellow Lions achieve the same will be missed among the program and in the room.
LAST TIME OUT: The Lions last time out, travelled to western Pennsylvania on Sunday, Feb. 6, where they faced then-ranked No. 19 Pitt, falling in the dual 30-5. In the match, the Lions got a pair of wins at 165 pounds and 184 pounds thanks to Joshua Ogunsanya and Bonino.
Ogunsnaya took on No. 14 Jake Wentzel, a two-time ACC Champion and the current national runner-up at 165 pounds, and it was a battle from start to finish. Ogunsanya needed a double leg takedown late in overtime to get the OT2 4-2 decision win.
Bonino got himself a 3-1 decision over No. 31 Gregg Harvey, Bonino's second ranked win of the season and of his career. Midway through the bout, Bonino took a shot and scored a takedown to take the lead, and his strong defensive efforts kept Harvey from scoring to lock up the decision.
RANKED LION WINS: Seven Lions have earned themselves at least one win over a ranked opponent so far this season.
125 | Joe Manchio
Ogunsanya's strong season continues as he has cracked the 165-pound top-20 in both rankings, coming in at No. 19 in Intermat's rankings, No. 20 in Flo's and he holds the No. 18 ranking in the NCAA Coaches' Panel. At 141 pounds, Kazimir remains at No. 19 in both rankings, while he carriers a No. 12 ranking in the Coaches' Panel.
Angelo Rini, who cracked the 133-pound national rankings last week for the first time since Nov. 1, 2021, remined in the rankings with a No. 24 ranking from Intermat and an honorable mention from FloWrestling. Joe Manchio (125) sits at No. 16 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel, No. 31 in Intermat's rankings and he holds an honorable mention from Flo.
Bonino, for the first time in his career thanks to his recent success, earned an honorable mention from FloWrestling. Rounding out Columbia's national ranked wrestlers is Nick Fine (174) and Kyle Mosher (157), with Fine coming in at No. 33 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel and Mosher holding an honorable mention from Flowrestling.
PIN PARTY: During Columbia's domination of LIU, the Lions stuck five Sharks on the way to the win. The five pins were the most for the Lions since 2006, where they collected six pins against Wagner in a 53-3 win.
The fastest pin came from Ogunsanya who stuck Blake Bahna at 2:37 and right behind him was Michael Baker, who much like Ogunsanya, didn't let his match get out of the first round sticking Karl Bouyer at 2:42. Rini got his pin at 3:17, while Fine ended his match at 4:11 and Bonino's win via fall came at 4:45.
CAPTAINS OF THREE: At the start of the season, at Columbia's outdoor practice during Columbia Football's Homecoming game on Oct. 16, 2021, Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Zach Tanelli announced that Kazimir and Manchio will be joined by Bonino as the 142nd, 143rd and 144th Lions to be named team captains for the 2021-22 season.
"All three bring unique elements to the program that consistently elevate the men and women of this team to be better versions of themselves," said Tanelli. "They deserve to have a title associated with their leadership."
HARVARD MATCHUP: Entering the weekend having lost their previous three duals, Harvard's meeting with the Lions will be the 91st between the two old Ivy League foes. The Lions hold a 49-39-2 all-time advantage but dropped the previous meeting in 2020. Columbia's last win came in 2019, in a 32-3 dual win and the last time the Lions knocked off the Crimson on Morningside was in 2014.
Harvard's lone dual win of the season came in a 39-6 win over Sacred Heart on Jan. 15, and it was followed by three-straight losses. All three of Harvard's most recent duals have been against Ivy League foes, with the Crimson falling at then-ranked Cornell (Jan. 22), and against then-ranked No. 20 Princeton and No. 22 Penn in a home doubleheader on Jan. 28.
The Crimson carry a lone grappler who is ranked nationally by Intermat, as at 165 pounds Philip Conigliaro (13-4) comes in at No. 15. At 149 pounds, Lukus Stricker (13-8) and at 174 pounds Joshua Kim (11-9) both round out Harvard's grapplers with double-digit wins this season.
BROWN MATCHUP: When Columbia and Brown meet on the mat, it will be the 67th time the two Ivy League foes have met on the mat, with the Lions holding a 37-28-1 advantage all-time. The last meeting, in 2020, the Lions knocked off Brown in a 29-6 win on Morningside and a win on Friday will make it two straight home victories over Brown.
The last five duals have resulted in losses for Brown, and their last dual win came over Hofstra on Dec. 9, 2021, in an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association matchup. The Bears have also recorded a dual win over Bellarmine, a 42-0 win on Nov. 21, 2021. Much like Harvard, Brown's last three opponents have been three Ivy League squads, losing at Cornell (Jan. 22), and then to Penn and Princeton in a doubleheader hosted in Providence, Rhode Island on Jan. 28.
While the Bears carry no ranked wrestlers into the matchup on Morningside, they do boast four with at least 12 wins. Timothy Levine leads the squad at 141 pounds with 14 wins, he is joined by Sam McMonagle (149) who has 13 wins and Jack Bokina (157) and Blake Saito (149) who each have 12 wins respectively.
VENUE POLICIES: All spectators in attendance, 5 years of age and older, must show full proof of vaccination to enter all Columbia Athletics venues. For events February 7-27, proof of full vaccination shows spectators have received two vaccine doses, except for those who have received the one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
