Men in First, Women in Third After Day One at Ivy League Round Robins

No. 2 ranked men are in first place with an undefeated 2-0 record and will face Princeton and Penn on Sunday, No. 3 ranked women finish day in third place with 3-1 record and will face Princeton and Harvard on Sunday.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Columbia Fencing program completed day one of the 2022 Ivy League Round Robin Fencing Championships on Saturday as the Lions' men's team is currently in first place with an undefeated 2-0 record, while the women's team is in third place with a 3-1 record. The event is being contested at Brown's Olney-Margolies Athletic Center.
On Sunday, the Columbia men's team will fence against Princeton at 2:15 p.m. and Penn at 3:30 p.m. The women will take on Princeton at 10 a.m., then Harvard at 1 p.m., as both Sunday opponents currently sit in first place with undefeated 3-0 records.
On Saturday, Columbia's men's team defeated Yale 18-9, then beat Harvard 15-12 to keep its record at an undefeated 2-0. The Lions are 2-0 as Harvard (2-1), Penn (1-1), and Princeton (1-1) are in second and third place respectively. Meanwhile, the women opened the day with a 20-7 win over Brown, defeated Yale 18-9, then dropped a 16-11 decision to Penn. The Lions ended their day with a 21-6 win over Cornell for their 3-1 record.
Both teams have a chance to win respective Ivy League Championships. The women's team entered the competition vying for its sixth title in the last seven years, including three straight outright titles, while the men's team is aiming to win its seventh title in the last eight years. Historically, Columbia tops the Ivy League in most combined team titles (53), most men's team titles (40) and most women's team titles (13) in 90 total years of competition. Aufrichtig has guided Columbia to 11 overall titles (six men's and five women's).

Individually, 30 Columbia fencers traveled to Providence for the Ivy League Championships. Leading the Lions on the men's side is Sidarth Kumbla, who went a perfect 6-0 in foil, Josef Cohen finished 5-1 in sabre, and Teddy Lombardo went 4-1 in epee. In women's, Sylvie Binder went 11-1 in foil, Audrey Chu and Valentina Boss both went 6-1 in epee, Ariana Mangano contributed a 5-1 record in epee, and Vera Kong and Chiara Di Perna both went 6-3 in sabre.
Columbia entered the weekend ranked No. 2 nationally in men's fencing and No. 3 in women's fencing in the US Fencing Midseason poll. Eleven Ivy League programs—six women's and all five men's—are listed in the top-11 of the poll. On the women's side, Princeton is No. 1, Columbia is No. 3, Cornell is No. 4, Harvard is No. 5, Yale is No. 10, and Penn is No. 11. In men's, Columbia is No. 2, Harvard is No. 4, Princeton is No. 7, Penn is No. 8, and Yale is No. 11.
Columbia now owns a 47-9-1 combined dual match record in 2021-22. Columbia's women are 25-4-1, while the men own a 22-5 dual match record.
Following the Ivy League Championships, Columbia returns home to host the George Kolombatovich Memorial Meet on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at Dodge Fitness Center. The Lions will take on NYU, Sacred Heart, and Vassar at two locations in Dodge Fitness Center including the University Gymnasium "Blue Gym" and the Columbia Fencing Room.
