Women's Tennis Downs Penn 5-2 in ECAC Finale

Lions finish third in ECAC Championship, win two of three matches in Ithaca.
ITHACA, N.Y.— The Columbia women's tennis team finished in third place and concluded the ECAC Women's Indoor Semifinal with a 5-2 win over Penn Sunday at Cornell's Reis Tennis Center. With the victory, Columbia improves to 6-2 on the year.
Penn won the doubles point and a took an early 1-0 lead. The nation's No. 40 ranked doubles team of Iulia Bryzgalova and Marija Curic defeated Columbia's Akanksha Bhan and Anna Zhang at No. 1 doubles, then Gavriella Smith and Eileen Wang won a 6-3 victory over Jennifer Kerr and Shivani Amineni.
But the Lions quickly rallied, claiming four of the five singles matches. Zhang won a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Curuic at No. 2 singles, Aminieni defeated Iris Gallo 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, then Melissa Sakar gave Columbia a commanding 3-1 lead with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Smith at No. 3 singles.
After Penn's Saige Roshkoff defeated Columbia's Clarine Lerby 7-5, 7-5 at No. 5 singles, Akanksha Bhan clinched the match for the Lions with a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over Penn's No. 70 ranked Iulia Bryzgalova. Columbia's Julia Haynes made it 5-2 Lions with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Wang.

Columbia is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 when it hosts St. John's and NJIT for a doubleheader at LifeTime Westchester.
