PHILADELPHIA — Columba earned a fourth-place finish at the 2022 College Squash Association Men's Team National Championships. The No. 4 ranking is the team's second-highest season-ending finish in program history.
Sixth-seeded Columbia (9-8) advanced out of the quarterfinals on Friday with a, 5-4, upset over No. 3 Trinity. The win was the team's first over the Bantams in program history. The Lions moved on to face No. 2 Harvard in the semifinals, falling, 7-2. They played No. 4 Yale to wrap things up on Sunday, falling, 8-1.
"The guys did everything they could they could today and I am proud of their efforts," Columbia interim head coach
Joanne Schickerling said. "Three of our losses came in very tight matches. Overall, it was an amazing season."
Columbia's final national ranking is second only to the 2018 team that finished No. 3. Sunday's highlight was a win by senior
Velavan Senthilkumar, who dispatched of Yale's Harrison Gill in three games, 11-1, 11-2, 11-5, in his final team event.
"The seniors were real leaders on the team this year," Schickerling went on to say. "They really helped create a good culture, leading the team to the second-best finish in program history. They are going to leave their mark behind and we're definitely going to miss them, but they've shown the underclassmen what it means to be a Columbia squash player and set the ground work for the future. They did an amazing job this season."
While the team's season is over, Columbia's men will await to see the draws for the CSA Individual National Championships. That tournament begins Friday, March 4, at the Penn Squash Center. Draws will come out in the week leading up to the tournament.
