Chapel Hill, NC -- The No. 23 Columbia men's tennis team defeated No. 21 UNC, 4-3, on the road in Chapel Hill. The Lions continued their dominant reign in the doubles competition, securing the match's first point before battling against the Tar Heels in singles. Tied 3-3 with the deciding point playing out from the sixth spot, sophomore
Roko Horvat defeated Peter Murphy in straight sets following a 7(8)-6(6) second set.
The No. 29 doubles team of
Max Westphal and
Theo Winegar defeated No. 25 Logan Zapp and Casey Kania 6-4 from the top spot. Horvat and
Alex Kotzen went on to secure the doubles point in a 6-4 victory over Benjamin Sigouin and Henry Lieberman.
Columbia expanded its lead to 2-0 in the singles competition as
Austen Huang recorded a straight sets victory over the Tar Heels' Chris Li from the fourth spot. North Carolina fought back from the third spot pushing the score to 2-1 with Logan Zapp's victory (7-5, 6-3) over No. 96
Hugo Hashimoto. The Tar Heels leveled the score, 2-2, at the conclusion of the second spot match. Benjamin Sigouin took the first set from Columbia's
Max Westphal with a 9-7 tiebreak set before securing the victory 6-4.
Henry Ruger reclaimed the lead for the Lions, winning in straight sets from the fifth spot against Anuj Watane. At the same time, No. 7
Alex Kotzen faced off against No. 73 Brian Cernoch in the top position. Kotzen secured the first set 6-3 before Cernoch countered with a 6-3 victory of his own in the second set. Forced into the deciding third set, Cernoch held his edge defeating the top Lion 6-3 for an overall 3-3 match tie.
With the match on the line and the first set already secured 7-5, Horvat defeated Murphy in first collegiate match-clinching victory.
