Columbia Has Solid First Day At Ivy Indoor Heps

Columbia Track & Field had four finish on the podium and 12 qualify for tomorrow's finals.

NEW YORK — Four Lions finished on the podium and 12 Lions posted qualifying times as Columbia Track & Field put a solid performance together in day one of the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Track & Field Championships held Saturday at The Armory.

Three Columbia women, Tiffany Bautista (long jump), Phoebe Anderson (3,000m) and Nikki Vanasse (3,000m) along with one Columbian man, David Vorbach (3,000m), all finished inside the top-five for podium finishes on day one.

While four women, Amara Onyeukwu (400m), Alexis Knight (400m), Sydney Goldson (500m) and Delaney Sanacore (1,000m) and eight men, Chris Balthazar (60m/200m), Jahi Hernandez (200m), Nixon McKenzie (800m), Juan Zarate-Sanchez (800m), Brandon Hicks (800m), Justin O'Toole (1,000m) and Michael Danzi (one mile) all qualified for Sunday's finals in their respective events.

HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN): Bautista, posting a personal best mark of 19-02.75/5.86m, gave Columbia the first podium finish of the day with her mark in the long jump.  She hit her mark on her first jump of the finals, and over the final three jumps only the top two finishers posted marks better the Bautista, as the third-place finishing mark (5.92m) was set on the first jump.  Columbia's other podium finishes, in the 3,000m, came from strong runs by Anderson and Vanasse as the pair of Lion women finished back-to-back at third and fourth with times of 9:17.12 and 9:22,92 respectively.  For Anderson, her time was a personal best in only the second time she has run the 3,000m.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN): Vorbach, fresh off a pair of school records, produced another podium finish for the Lions, clocking a time of 8:02.89 in the 3,000m to finish fourth.

In the heptathlon, Luke Ciarelli, who sits seventh after four events, earned himself 749 points and moved up two spots thanks to him clearing 6-04.25/1.94m in the high jump to wrap up the day with a second-place finish in that heptathlon event.  While in the 200m prelims, Hernandez finished fifth, tying his own school record in the event with a qualifying time of 21.48.
