BROOKLYN, N.Y.—The No. 2/3 ranked Columbia Fencing teams won four and tied one of their combined six dual matches Sunday at the LIU Shark Showcase. Columbia's women's team tied St. John's 13-13, defeated NYU 19-8, and claimed a 22-5 win over host LIU. The men defeated St. John's 14-13, dropped a 14-13 decision to NYU, then defeated Hunter 25-2.
With Sunday's results, Columbia improves to 42-8-1 overall, while the women are now 22-3-1 and men are 20-5.
The morning started with dual matches against St. John's. Columbia's women ended up tying the Red Storm 13-13 as only two fencers competed for both teams in foil. St. John's held 5-4 advantages in both sabre and epee. Ruoqui Fei led the Lions as she won three foil bouts. On the men's side, Columbia registered a 14-13 win over the Red Storm. The Lions overcame a 7-2 St. John's advantage in foil with a 7-2 win in epee and slim 5-4 win in sabre. Julian Maldonaldo won three epee bouts and
Josef Cohen claimed the match-clinching point in sabre.
Next up was crosstown rival NYU in the two program's first meeting of the 2021-22 season. On Sunday, the Columbia women downed NYU 19-8 as the Lions rode an 8-1 sabre advantage for the victory.
Anika Tsapatsaris and Chiara DiPerna both won three consecutive sabre bouts,
Vivian Zheng won three foil bouts, and Nika Flilppov claimed three epee bouts. NYU's men rallied for a slim 14-13 win over the Lions using a 6-3 foil win and 5-4 epee advantage for the victory.
Zachary Binder and
Joon Paik both won three foil matches to lead the Lions. The Lions will face the Violets for a second time this year on Feb. 16 for the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet at Dodge Fitness Center.
Both Columbia teams concluded the day with sizeable victories as the women defeated host LIU 22-5 and the men won 25-2 over Hunter. In women's, Columbia swept all nine sabre bouts as
Chloe Gouhin, DiPerna and
Anna Li all went 3-0 in bouts, Zheng claimed three foil bouts, and
Valentina Bos and
Mina Yamanaka both won three consecutive epee bouts. The men swept both sabre and foil competition 9-0 en route to the 25-2 win over Hunter. Cohen,
Trenton Schmitt, and
Jackson McBride all won three sabre bouts, Binder, Paik and
Michael Hilmer each won three foil bouts, and Maldonaldo and
Ethan Chin both won three epee bouts.
Columbia will compete at the Ivy League Round Robin Fencing Championships next weekend on Saturday, Feb. 12 through Sunday, Feb. 13. The event will be hosted by Brown in Providence, R.I. A dual match schedule will be available later this week.
