No. 43 Lions Drop Ivy Opener to Cornell, 4-3

HARRISON, N.Y.—The No. 43 ranked Columbia women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Cornell in its Ivy League opener Saturday afternoon at LifeTime Westchester. Columbia hosts No. 30 ranked Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m. at LifeTime Westchester.
Cornell claimed the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead. Columbia's Anna Zhang and Winta Tewolde defeated Cornell's Katherine Nguyen and Ashley Huang 6-1 at No. 3 doubles but the Big Red won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles tor the advantage. Cornell's Jenny Wong and Lauren Stein defeated Columbia's Akanksha Bhan and Melissa Sakar 7-6 (4) at No. 1 and Alexandra Savu and Maria Adiacontitri defeated Shivani Amineni and Rachele Rimondini 6-2 at No. 2.
Columbia won three singles matches as Jennifer Kerr defeated Lauren Stein 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, Sakar defeated Adiacontitri at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2, and Julia Haynes won a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 5 singles over Valerie Ho.
Cornell also claimed three singles matches as Lan Mi won a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 decision over Akanksha Bhan at No. 1, Katherine Nguyen defeated Anna Zhang 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 at No. 2, and Jenny Wong won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Shivani Amineni at No. 6.
The loss drops Columbia to 10-6 on the year and 0-1 in the Ivy League, while Cornell improves to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play.
