NEW YORK -- The Columbia lacrosse team (2-2) was paced by its rookies in a 14-9 loss to visiting Brown in the Lions' Ivy Opener. First-year goalkeeper
Simone Koryszewski recorded 12 stops in the loss while fellow rookie,
Dani Falcone, produced her first collegiate hat trick.
Assisted by senior
Sydney Paoletti, Falcone opened scoring in the first quarter (12:34), putting the Lions ahead 1-0. Unfortunately, the Lions would relinquish the lead, giving up a pair of goals to the Bears to close the first quarter 1-2.
The second quarter proved fruitful for the visitors as Brown tacked on five unanswered goals in the first ten minutes. Despite tallies by senior
Rachel Graff and first-year
Kate Cunning, Brown was able to maintain its pace with a duo of its own to enter the half up 9-3.
Not to go down without a fight, the Lions rebounded to outscore the Bears 6-5 in the second half. Graff found the back of the net a second time just 45 seconds into the third quarter while Falcone bookended a pair of Brown strikes to enter the fourth 11-5.
Columbia picked up momentum as Falcone and Cunning scored back to back goals early in the fourth quarter. Despite a tally from Brown's Maggie Fowler, Columbia continued to surge forward as senior
Katie Lutz capitalized on a free position opportunity. Classmate
Payton Lill capped off the afternoon with two minutes left to play, securing a final score of 14-9.
Koryszewski was aided by sophomore
Lauren Yun whose four ground balls and caused turnover led the Lions.
The Lions return to Lawrence A. Wien Stadium this Tuesday to host Monmouth at 3:00 P.M..
