Joe Green throws two touchdown passes, totals 95 passing yards, Marcus Libman and Cameron Burt catch touchdown passes, Jake Langdon runs for another as Lions amass 253 yards of total offense.
NEW YORK—Quarterback Joe Green threw two touchdown passes and to lead Columbia in its annual Spring Football Game Saturday afternoon at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. Afterward, the Columbia Football Players Club sponsored its annual spring alumni and team barbecue under the main grandstand.
The simulated game featured 64 total plays from scrimmage as Columbia's offense totaled 253 yards on 64 plays. Tackles on defense were on the touch/tag so statistics are skewed.
Each quarterback was given several series opportunities to run the offense. Green finished 5-9 on passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, Caden Bell completed 5-13 passes for 49 yards, Austin Grier finished 4-5 for 72 yards, and Kristopher Jenner went 2-4 for 15 yards.
Led by Green, Columbia's offense generated three touchdowns. On the first drive of the scrimmage, he found Cameron Burt for an 18-yard scoring strike, setup a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Jake Langdon, and hit Marcus Libman for a 28-yard touchdown on the scrimmage's final play. Langdon led the Lions in rushing with 21 yards, Libman caught four passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, Ernest Robertson caught four passes for 40 yards, and JJ Jenkins caught two passes for 52 yards, including a 43-yard pass from Grier.
Columbia's defense also registered several highlight plays as the Lions accumulated four sacks, three pass breakups, and registered a tackle behind the line.
The Lions started the scrimmage with the punt game and return game. The Lions then went into three series of short-yardage plays led by three different quarterbacks, then went through an offense vs. defense passing drill. Columbia followed with field goals as Will Hughes
After Saturday, the next time Columbia Football will gather for a full practice as a team will be in mid-to-late August. The Lions will welcome the 2022 freshman class to campus in August prior to its season opener at Marist on Sept. 17. The spring game marked the 12th and final practice during March and April. Spring practices began on March 25. The Lions practiced 12 times between March 25 and Saturday's annual Spring Game.
Columbia returns 18 starters (10 on offense and eight on defense) and a host of additional players who saw extensive action during the 2021 season. As a whole, the Lions return 47 total lettermen (players who saw game action in 2021).
Columbia concluded its 2021 season with a 7-3 overall record and finished tied for fourth in the Ivy League with a 4-3 conference record. The seven overall wins rank as the third most at Columbia since the school joined the Ivy League in 1956 and rank as the ninth most overall season wins in school history. For the third time in the last four seasons, Columbia went an undefeated 3-0 in non-conference games. The Lions also registered a 4-1 home record with the .800 home winning percentage ranking as the 11th best total in school history. And, the Lions finished with a winning record for the third time in the last four seasons for the first time since 1945-48. The 24 wins during those four years also mark the winningest four-year period in 73 years (1945-48).
Columbia will officially announce its 2022 fall schedule, television schedule and ticket availability at a later date. The Lions will also officially announce their coaching staff additions next week.
