Incoming women's tennis first year earns prestigious academic recognition
WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Incoming Columbia women's tennis first year, Sophia Wang, has been named the 2022 USTA National Junior Scholar-Athlete. Awarded on an annual basis, the accolade recognizes one male and one female high school tennis player that excels both on and off the court.
Hailing from St. Petersburg, Fla., the five-star recruit has ranked as high as No. 1 in Florida and boasts a 25-13 record including 22 victories against fellow five-stars.
Award recipients each receive a trip to New York City for recognition at the USTA Semi-Annual Meeting and Conference. Additionally, they will be awarded $1,000 from the Wingfield Society, an organization of USTA volunteers dedicated to preserving the history of tennis and named for Major Walter C. Wingfield, who is recognized as the inventor of the modern game.

USTA Selection Criteria:

Junior or senior in high school (graduating class of 2022 or 2023)

USTA National Standing in the Top 100 (boys'/girls' 18s) as of Feb. 16, 2022

An unweighted GPA of 3.75 (on a 4.0) scale; honors and/or AP/IB classes will be given additional consideration in the selection process
