Malak El Allami Advances to Semifinals at Ivy League Qualifier Tournament

Lions duo of El Allami and Sophia Wang advance to semifinals in doubles action

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Columbia women's tennis had four athletes compete at the Ivy League Qualifier over the weekend, hosted by Harvard at Beren Tennis Center. Sophomore Malak El Allami continued her strong fall season by advancing to the semifinals in singles and doubles play.

Also competing for the Lions were Michelle Li, Emily Baek, and Sophia Wang. Li and Wang fell in the opening round of singles play, with Baek advancing to the round of 16.

El Allami opened singles play with straight-sets wins in the first and second rounds. Defeating Dartmouth's Brooke Hess 6-3, 7-6(7-2) in the round of 32 before taking down Harvard's Clair Shao 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinals, El Allami defeated Yale's Leena Friednamn 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the semifinals, El Allami battled but came up short against Harvard's Charlotte Owensby, who won 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles play, Baek and Li defeated Princeton's duo of Anna Maria Fedotova and Madeleine Jessup 8-6 before falling to Harvard's duo of Stephanie Yakoff/Kavya Karra 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

El Allami and partner Sophia Wang had a bye in the round of 32. In the round of 16, they defeated Cornell's Michelle Ryndin and Andrea Martinez 8-1. In the semifinals, Columbia's duo fell to Harvard's pair of Charlotte Owensby and Claire Shao, 7-6(7-4).

Columbia will remain in Cambridge this week, participating in the Harvard Fall Invitational from Friday through Sunday.
