5 THINGS TO KNOW:
#1 | FIRST POINT IN THE BOOKS
The Lions are coming off a hard-fought, 1-1, draw Friday night at Manhattan College. Columbia got on the board in the 32nd minute when pressure created by
Will DeNight caused the Jaspers to head a pass over their own keeper for an own goal. That lead lasted until the 50-minute mark when Manhattan leveled from the penalty spot. The result kept the Lions unbeaten against the Jaspers in the all-time series, which currently sits at 8-0-3 in favor of Columbia.
#2 | NEW YORK STATE OF MIND
Columbia is in the midst of four consecutive matches against New York State competition. So far, Columbia is 0-1-1 in that stretch, falling, 2-1, at home to Stony Brook last Tuesday before drawing Manhattan on Friday up in the Bronx. Following Monday night's match against St. John's, the Lions will host LIU this coming Saturday. Two more in-state non-conference matches await Columbia on September 24 at Iona and October 4 against Hofstra.
#3 | TRIO OF SCORERS
All of Columbia's points so far this year have come from one of three different players.
Jack Muoio tallied the first goal of the season against George Washington, which gave the Lions a first-half lead in an eventual, 2-1, defeat. The goal was the first of Muoio's collegiate career and came directly from a corner sent in by
Will DeNight, who was credited with the assist.
Jake Novoshelski has the other goal, volleying a strike into the back of the net in the 76th minute against Stony Brook to cut the Seawolves' lead in half. Novoshelski's goal was the third of his career after scoring a pair last season.
#4 | DEBUT LIONS
Nine Lions have made their Columbia debuts to this point in the season —
Ryan Yang,
Brandon Newman,
Ben Sidley,
Alessandro Franciosa,
Carmine Falco,
Cy Sokolowski, Joao Lima,
Jesse Greissman and
Nicolas Jandeleit. Yang, Newman, Sidley and Franciosa appeared in the Starting XI in the season opener against George Washington. Sokolowski and Falco have since each also earned their first starts.
#5 | THE SERIES
Columbia leads the all-time series with St. John's, 7-3-0. The two teams first played against one another in 1981 with the Lions winning the first seven through 1989. After the series took a 23-year hiatus, the rivalry was renewed in 2012 and again in 2019. St. John's has won the last three matchups, including a 1-0 result last season in Queens.
