Offensive Coordinator Mark Fabish Breaks Things Down
NEW YORK — As the Columbia football program gets set to debut at Marist Saturday night, GoColumbiaLions.com will preview each unit group. In the final installment, offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Mark Fabish breaks down what the Lions hope to accomplish this season.
Reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Joe Green is back to start at quarterback after a solid sophomore campaign. Green started all 10 games, completing on 56.0 percent of his passes to go with 10 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.
"We're in a good place and we're better than we were yesterday," said Fabish. "The guys have been giving us everything they've got and we couldn't be prouder of their willingness to do that. Our goals are simple, to protect the ball, be great teammates and finish. Whatever happens will be a by-product of the work that we have been putting in."
Columbia excelled at protecting the passer last season, allowing a program-low 11 sacks in 2021, and are slated to boast a senior-laden offensive line. Fifth-year senior and team captain Stew Newblatt anchors the unit at left tackle, where he started all 10 contests last year. Andrew Pruske (left guard), Will Hamilton (center), Matt Klenk (RG) and right tackles Zach Minch and David Sawyer round out the group.
On the ground, the Lions posted 158.0 rushing yards per game in 2021 to rank third in the Ivy League. Ryan Young took All-Ivy League honorable mention honors after picking up 498 yards and three touchdowns. Columbia will also use a pair of juniors in Joey Giorgi and Ty'son Edwards in an expanded role. Edwards played in 10 games last year and got 10 touches in the backfield.
Columbia spread the wealth in the passing attack with seven different players picking up at least 10 receptions. Marcus Libman and Ernest Robertson tied for the team lead in receiving yards (280). Bryson Canty has shown flashes of highlight-reel playmaking ability and is poised to see more time as well. At tight end, Luke Painton and Dominic Busby provide more veteran stability. Painton hauled in a pair of touchdown grabs last season and Busby was active in all 10 games last season.
Kick-off in Poughkeepsie is set for 6 p.m. and the contest can be seen on ESPN3. Columbia opens its home slate against Ivy League rival Princeton on Saturday, October 1.
