Eight Columbia athletics teams in action this weekend
NEW YORK — The busiest road weekend of the academic year to date is on tap for Columbia's athletics programs, as eight different teams will combine to compete in 12 separate events over the course of Thursday through Sunday.
Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview all of that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus. Be sure to access each team's website on gameday to keep up with all of the action as it happens.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Columbia women's soccer (3-1-1) hits the road for two non-conference contests. On Thursday, the Lions will meet Seton Hall in South Orange, New Jersey for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Led by former Columbia assistant coach Joshua Osit, the Pirates are off to a 3-2-2 start. Senior Abbie Roberts leads SHU in scoring with two goals, while classmate Grace Gordon has played the majority of minutes in goal. Sunday, the Lions will meet Hofstra (4-2-1) in Hempstead, New York. The Pride have already faced two Ivy League competitors this season, drawing Yale (0-0) and falling to Brown (3-0). For Columbia, first-year Maia Tabion enters as the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week and leads the Lions in both goals (3) and points (7).
CROSS COUNTRY
Columbia cross country will split its squad for the first time in the 2022 season when the Lions send a group of runners to the Coaching Tree Invitational hosted by Indiana in Bloomington. Another group stays home for the Iona Meet of Champions, set to run at Van Cortlandt Park. Both races are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16 and both will get started at 10 a.m. It's the first time the Lions have run since the men and women each finished third at the Stony Brook Invitational. Rory Clare took second (14:29.40) in the women's 4K and Justin O'Toole clocked an 11th place time of 19:26.90 in the men's 6K as the top two Columbia finishers.
VOLLEYBALL
Columbia volleyball (3-3) wraps up its non-conference slate of matches with a trip out to Queens, New York to take part in the Red Storm Invitational, set to run Friday and Saturday. Columbia will be one of three teams taking part, opening the weekend Friday at noon when they take tournament host St. John's. The Lions will then face Middle Tennessee State later that day at 4 p.m. Columbia finishes the weekend Saturday morning with a matchup against Boston College at 11 a.m.
Last weekend, the Lions hosted the Big Apple Tournament and took two out of three matches. Columbia powered past Lafayette in five sets and knocked off Manhattan in straight sets for a solid weekend. Pierce Woodall enters this weekend leading the team in kills with 55, while Ruby van der Heide sits at the top with 140 assists. Aidan Conner has been a force at the net, leading the team in blocks with 17.
MEN'S TENNIS
Columbia men's tennis opens its fall campaign this weekend at the Knoxville Showdown. Hosted by the University of Tennessee, the competition will run from Friday-Sunday. Last week, four Lions collected Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Preseason Accolades. Junior Alex Kotzen now ranks No. 10 in the country, playing from Columbia's top spot. Teammates Max Westphal and Theo Winegar earned the No. 21 doubles spot while first-year Michael Zheng was acclaimed as the No. 3 newcomer.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Columbia women's tennis embarks upon its 2022-2023 season this Friday and Saturday, hosting the Lion Quad out at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. The Lions return All-Ivy League second-teamer Anna Zhang, while welcoming first-years Sophia Wang and Alexandra Torre. Ahead of this season, Wang was named the 2022 USTA National Junior Scholar-Athlete. Draws for this weekend's event will be posted once they become available.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The women's golf team begins its fall season this weekend at the Nittany Lion Invitational, which will be hosted at the Penn State Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania. The 54-hole event will consist of 16 teams: Boston College, Bradley, Bucknell, Butler, Central Michigan, Columbia, Eastern Kentucky, High Point, Kennesaw State, Navy, Richmond, Seton Hall, Toledo, Towson, Youngstown State and host Penn State. The Lions return six from last year's squad, including All-Ivy selections Taylor Zeng and Allison Paik. Lineups, tee times and daily results will be posted to @CULionsWGolf Twitter and Instagram, with daily recaps on GoColumbiaLions.com.
MEN'S GOLF
The men's golf team will compete in its second fall tournament this Saturday and Sunday at the 36-hole Cornell/Temple Invitational. A combined 15 teams will be competing from 12 different schools -- Cornell, Penn and Temple will have two teams, joined by one team apiece from Binghamton, Bucknell, Canisius, Columbia, Dartmouth, Lafayette, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's (Pa.) and Siena. Columbia is coming off a solid fifth-place showing at last weekend's Doc Gimmler Invitational. Nathan Han (-8) earned a top-10 finish, while Wyatt McGovern (-5) also earned a top-10 competing as an individual at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate.
FOOTBALL
The football team returns to the gridiron Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest against Marist. The Lions will look to build on a 7-3 mark in 2021 and return a talented core. Junior quarterback Joe Green was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2021 and the Lions have experience back at nearly every position. Columbia overcame a 14-0 deficit to defeat the Red Foxes, 37-14, last season at Robert K. Kraft Field and are 5-0 in the all-time series.
